- Jean-Nicholas Méo calls 2004 an extremely pretty vintage with excellent balance and while it's not a truly great millésime , it's altogether lovely. It could have been a great vintage but it lacks just a bit of concentration because otherwise, we had very good sugars at between 12.5 and 14% and I chaptalized nothing. Acidities were correct and while the wines have real energy, the pHs are not particularly high. The growing season was difficult however as we had hail in Chambolle and Morey, which delayed maturities but thankfully, an ideal September saved the harvest. We still had read more...a lot of sorting to do and we threw out about 10% of the crop due to one problem or another, such as under ripe berries, dried berries or a touch oidium. We did saignée a few cuvées and the Vosne was concentrated slightly. The malos were very long and I elected to rack once. Readers will notice that Méo has continued to expand, if only slightly, his range of négociant wines. Note: from a .70 ha parcel, most of which are also 70 year old vines Saturated and superbly elegant and expressive red fruit aromas that seem to exude an intoxicating mix of Asian spices that perfectly complement the textured, precise and admirably pure middle weight flavors that are beautifully complex and finish with strikingly good length. This is impeccably balanced and very, very Vosne in character. (hide)
