- Jean-Nicholas Méo calls 2005 a mix of 1999 and 2002 with the ripeness of '99 and the acid balance and energy of '02. For most of the Côte 2005 was an ideal growing season but in Vosne and Vougeot we had early season hail which knocked down yields considerably, indeed we lost up to 50% in some parcels and our overall yields were only marginally higher than in 2003, which is to say between 16 and 35 hl/ha. Moreover, August was very dry and hot and it was clear, especially for some young vines without deep root networks that the vines were beginning to suffer from heat stress. Thankfully, there read more...was 20 ml of rain at the beginning of September which gave the vines a much needed drink and it was enough to drop the potential alcohols by as much as one-half degree. We had outstanding harvest conditions and I decided to begin picking on September 16th but I found that I didn't quite have the potential degree I was looking for. So, I stopped and waited for four days and then we had three days of very strong north wind which began to dry things out. I saw vines starting to lose their leaves and thus we decided to get the fruit picked and into the fermenters. I'm happy that I decided to wait because those few days were just enough to raise the potential degree and I chaptalized almost nothing. And we were also able to pick very quickly once we began in earnest because the crop was so clean that there was virtually no triage, which obviously allows you to get the fruit in fast. Save for the tiny yields, I really like the vintage, especially at the lower levels. (Kermit Lynch, Berkley, CA; Jeanne-Marie de Champs-Domaine et Saveurs for Frederick Wildman, NY and for Boston Wine Company, MA; Berry Brothers & Rudd, Bibendum, Goedhuis & Co, Justerini & Brooks, Uncorked Ltd and Richards Walford, all UK). Note: 40 year old vines A nose of extract of black pinot and black cherry fruit that is also spicy and elegant but here the coolness of the vineyard comes into play in the form of a certain reserve, particularly on the delicious and mineral suffused flavors that possess superb focus and intense detail on the layered and tautly muscular finish that goes on and on. The transparency here is stunning as is the sheer length. A wine to find, buy and forget as it will need plenty of cellar time. (hide)
