Domaine/Maison Louis Jadot Volnay Clos de la Barre 2015

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

This has such a multi-faceted nose with precise notes of dusty rocks, fleshy fruits, pollen, leather anise and dried strawberry it is completely engaging. It's big and round in the mouth with plenty of acid and good body buffering the not inconsequential tannins. While the palate doesn't match the sheer beauty of the nose here it certainly stands to improve in the cellar but is a lovely mouthful of rambunctious fruit today. 2009-2017 91pts

Maison Louis Jadot is a winery that’s proud of its heritage and land. Founded in 1859 by Louis Henry Denis Jadot, Maison Jadot expanded rapidly, taking northern Europe by storm. When his son, Louis Jean Baptiste, took over in 1900, more change took place, and many vineyards were acquired, including Corton Charlemagne and Chevalier Montrachet Les Demoiselles. With the help of Rudy Kopf, founder of the Kobrand Corporation, Maison Jadot expanded even further, setting up shop in both England and the U.S. In 1985, Madame Jadot sold the company to Rudy Kopf’s family, ensuring a successful future for the company. The land is very important to Maison Louis Jadot, and making the terroir shine through is always a priority. Maison Jadot identifies with its Burgundy heritage, and all wines are Appellation Contrôlée. The winery controls about 380 acres of land in Burgundy, including Côte d'Or, Mâconnais and Beaujolais. Jacques Lardière, winemaster, works with Christine, Guillaume, and Audrey to ensure that the single-variety wines produced, including Pinot Noir for reds, Chardonnay for whites, and Gamay for Beaujolais, always produce the best, most consistent wines. Nose of crushed stone and red berry fruit. Mineral and some spice. Some plum notes as well. Vibrant on the palate with bright fruit. Berry, plum and some straw. Dry. Lingers well. Nice and tasty! 3/8/12

The 2010 Volnay Clos de la Barre is a huge implosive wine loaded with fruit. This explosive Volnay bursts onto the palate with black cherries tar licorice smoke and incense. The aromas and flavors take on a decidedly exotic quality as the wine sits in the glass. This is another wine with a bright future. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2028. -Antonio Galloni Robert Parkers Wine Advocate.

Bright medium red. Rocky aromas of wild red fruits, coffee and spices. Suave on entry, then tight and medicinal, even a bit tough, in the middle, but with a fine grain to the dark cherry flavor. A strong impression of minerally acidity intensifies... Stephen Tanzers IWC. A Pinot Noir wine from Burgundy in France. 2010 Louis Jadot Volnay Clos de la Barre 750ml

This is aromatically similar to the Clos des Chjnes but with a touch of menthol. The suave round and utterly delicious flavors are shaped by relatively fine tannins and plenty of sappy dry extract yet the finish is exceptionally firm intense and highly persistent finish that is at present overtly austere. Somewhat curiously this is not quite as refined as the Clos des Chjnes and is actually on the robust side at present. Note further that this will require a very long cellar snooze before it is completely ready for prime time. Burghound.

Good dark red. Exotic slightly medicinal aromas of dried cherry incense licorice and eucalyptus. Supple spicy and quite dry offering good energy to its rather cool red fruit flavors. The aromatic finish features noteworthy energy and thrust. 90+ Stephen Tanzers IWC.
