Domaine les Pallieres Gigondas 2006

Member Review by duncan 906:

I bought this bottle of wine for £13.50 from the website www.bidforwine.co.uk/auctions/show/105772. Gigondas is an appellation created in 1971,although wine production in the area goes back to before the Romans, for red and rose wines from around the village of that name in the southern Rhone valley. My bottle of red Gigondas comes from a well known and ancient estate and consists of 80% grenache with the rest being syrah, mourverde and cinsault. The vines averaged at 60 years old and the wine was aged in oak barrels.2006 was the last year the estate only produced one cuvee of red Gigondas for in subsequent years there were two.I started my bottle last night with my pork chop and I did enjoy it.There is some concentrated blackcurrant, bramble and licorice style fruit with a hint of spice and it is well structured and reserved although I thought it a l;ittle overtannic. However it was a good accompaniment to the pork chop.

Wheras the estate originally produced one cuvee of red gigondas, from 2007 it produiced two;'Les Racines' from older vines near the house, and 'Terrasse de Diable' from vines on the higher ground. The estate also produces a rose. Medium red. Hugely seductive aromas of red berries, garrigue, rose and incense display room-filling power. Vibrant strawberry and raspberry flavors are finely etched and strikingly sweet, with energetic minerality adding clarity and lift. Remarkably elegant Gigondas with the pure sex appeal to enjoy in its youth but also the balance to repay cellaring. A must purchase for southern Rhone freaks.
