Domaine Laurens Marcillac Rouge 2016

Member Review by duncan 906:

I bought this bottle of wine from a shop near Oxford [www.oxfordwines.co.uk ] for £10. Marcillac is an appellation for red and rose wines made of at least 80% mansois [ sometimes called fer servadou or braucol ] from 11 communes north-west of the small town of Rodez [about 70 miles north-east of the City of Toulouse ] It is a small appellation with only 200 hectares under vine and 54 producers one of which is the family concern of Domaine du Cros Their 'Lo Sang del Pais ' cuvee which roughly translates as 'blood of the soil 'is 100% fer servadou and is aged in stainless steel tanks.I started my bottle last night with my supper of pork chop and I did enjoy it. It is a deep dark red colour and full-bodied. There is an extremely intense blackcurrant, blueberry, bramble and cherry style fruit there with a very spicy finish,I initially thought it a little tannic but after about an hour it had softened up a lot and I was left with a really smooth and exquisite wine.

The history of Domaine Laurens Having been awarded a BTS Viticulture et Œnologie, Michel Laurens gained his initial experience at the heart of the management team of a wine producing establishment. In 1983 he and his brother, Gilbert, decided to continue the family tradition of vine growing and wine production, and in 1986 they opened their own distillery. At present, the Domain Laurens consists of 21 hectares of vineyards which are cultivated and exploited in the family tradition with great care and diligence. The system of green sowing between the vines allows the soil to remain cool throughout the hot summer months, avoids soil erosion and limits the use of herbicides thus preserving the integrity of the fruit. In mid-october the grapes are harvested by hand allowing selection of the best quality fruit, care being taken to leave the grapilles, which have yet to ripen, on the vine for the pleasure of the local hunters .... To ensure the production of wines, aperitifs and spirits in the best and purest traditions of the Aveyron, the ancient vaulted cellars are furnished with all the modern equipment essential to ensure effective step by step quality control. The unique character of the Marcillac red and white wines, the Ratafias, the spirits and the liqueurs we produce are the pleasing result of this combination of tradition and modernity. The principal customers of the Laurens Domain are individual wine-lovers, restaurants, specialist shops and boutiques aswell as commercial wine cellars. Our produce is marketed locally, nationally and abroad. The grape-vine works well ! We regularly welcome coach parties. Maryse and Martine Laurens offer visitors an entertaining programme including a visit to Clairvaux, an impressive medieval village with ramparts, narrow winding alleys, vaulted cellars and a roman church listed as a historic monument. The tour is nicely rounded off by a visit to the wine cellars with, of course, the oppurtunity to taste our wine. Read less

Lettie Teague, wine writer for the Wall Street Journal, said this wine was unlike anything she had ever tasted, and I would agree. Not that it's hugely different, it just isn't a wine that you would mistake for some other varietal. Austere when first opened, it becomes much more enjoyable within half an hour. It's a bold wine that would go well with game or a steak.

Mansois, which is the local name for Fer Servadou is the only grape variety used in the A.O.C. of Marcillac. Its rustic wines show characteristic aromas of blackberries, raspberries, cassis and pepper with an iron minerality attributed to the local terroir.

Bright, cherry-red Marcillac rose, with an intense full bouquet perfumed by a hint of tart fruit. It even has a bit of tannin, which makes it just right with lamb sirloin sandwiches.

Marcillac is a tiny region in the southwest of France. Made from the indigenous Fer grape variety also known as Mansois. Full of mixed black fruit - berries, plums and spice. Intense, dark fruit yet not excessively extracted. This is mineraled and still lithe on the palate. Just delicious and fresh.
