Ruby with tinges of violet. A powerful wine with a full-bodied structure, its first impression is that of an ample, firm wine. Rich and supple, with vanilla and pepper notes on the palate that persist through the long finish.

A sleeper selection, the 2007 Lirac Roc-Epine is a richly fruity effort offering hints of fresh black raspberries, cherries, licorice, and earth. With abundant fruit, full body as well as loads of character, it should provide enjoyment over the next 4ndash;5 years. Fair prices and exuberant fruit make it easy for Domaine Lafondrsquo;s wines to attract fans.

With a bigger structure, firmer tannin, and more concentrated black fruits, the 2003 Lirac Roc Epine is not as seductive and charming as the Cotes du Rhone, but there is more to it. Bigger and more tannic, it requires another year of bottle age, and should last for 4ndash;5. Readers looking for generously-constituted, rich, flavorful, impeccably pure, well-made wines that sell for a song should check out Domaine Lafond. Although they are best known for their terrific Tavel rose (which I highly recommend), the quality of their reds has risen significantly over the last 2ndash;3 vintages.

Domaine Lafond is a 65 hectare family-run estate based in the Tavel DOC of the southern Rhône. This Lirac is a blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvédre and shows gorgeous tannins and black stone fruit notes. Serve with a light chill for the perfect summer wine.
