Domaine la Garrigue Cotes du Rhone Cuvee Romaine 2016

External Review:

Dark red. Aromas of dried cherry and raspberry are complicated by suggestions of smoked meat and licorice. Sappy red fruit flavors show good energy and become sweeter with air. Dusty tannins firm the finish, which features a touch of bitter blood orange. This youthful wine benefits quite a bit from decanting.

Here goes my first attempt to describe a wine. Please excuse my beginner lingo...I opened and drank immediately as instructed by the wine seller. I found it to be overwhelming/confusing to my palate. Definitely big with strong tannins and a long finish, which I usually like but for some reason I felt the alcohol was overpowering. After a few sips, I decided to let it breathe and came back for more. At about 20 minutes it had a nice berry flavor, maybe tobacco as well? After more time, it lost its appeal and the flavors were no longer distinguishable. Any thoughts on why the wine developed like this? or is my palate too immature for this wine?

Bottle had a flaw, lot number L1C R07, has a strong spritzy orange-ish over-taste that overwhelms the wine, something akin to secondary fermentation. I really liked the last bottle, too bad this time.

Needs 1-2 years to really show it's potential

Excellent value! Balanced and earthy, full-bodied, but with a fine minerality. Perfect daily drinker at this price point. Will not hesitate to buy again!

Old world monster. Huge initial explosion of fruit, followed by massive iron and blood overtones. Only flaw is the shortness. If it had length it would rival 400 dollar CDP's.

Fleshy in feel, with plum sauce and blackberry coulis flavors lined with charcoal and tobacco notes. Drink now.

A dense purple color along with a bouquet of kirsch liqueur, licorice, and lavender. Full-bodied with stunning depth and richness as well as a long finish.

A year-in, year-out spectacular value, the 2012 Cotes du Rhone Cuvee Romaine is a blend of 65% Grenache, 25% Mourvedre and 10% Syrah that spends 10–12 months in concrete prior to bottling. A custom cuvee made by importer Eric Solomon and consultant Philippe Cambie, it comes from 60- to 90-year-old vines and is basically a declassified Vacqueyras (at a Cotes du Rhone price). Loaded with garrigue, saddle leather, herbes de Provence and both kirsch and blackberry fruit, it is medium to full-bodied, layered and supple on the palate, with fine tannin emerging on the finish. Showing the vintage nicely and loaded with character, it should be purchased by the case and consumed over the coming 4–6 years.

While drinking this wine, I was convinced that I was drinking a high-end Châteauneuf-du-Pape and not a simple Côtes du Rhône as the label states. Knock-out aromas of roasted herbs, meat juices and leather are followed by rich, opulent and ripe fruit flavors, all framed by firm, savory tannins. A hedonistic delight, this cuvée must be tasted to be believed.

Medium-bodied, but with great concentration. Smooth black cherry and blackberry fruits, molded by great structure and dry finish. Delicious with anything from chicken to pasta mdash; a perfect addition to any table.

Côtes du Rhônes were among the first wines that I discovered that offered unbelievable complexity and flavors at such an affordable price-point. This 100% Grenache cuvée, unusual for a Côtes du Rhône, has a nose of Provençal herbs and crushed raspberries. On the palate, black cherry and hints of strawberry fruit ride on a bed of minerals and silky tannins, creating a long, spicy finish. A favorite food pairing with this wine would be roast pork or beef tenderloin with a mushroom sauce.
