Domaine Jean-Louis Chave St. Joseph Offerus 2003

Member Review by duncan 906:

I bought this bottle of wine as part of a lot from the website www.bidforwine.co.uk/auctions/show/57537 Saint Joseph is an AOC created in 1956 [ although wine production in the area goes back to at least the Romans ] for red and white wines from the area around the village of Tournon on the west bank of the Rhone opposite Tain/Hermitage on the east about 40 miles south of Lyon. The red wines are made from the syrah grape [although since 1979 up to 10% of the white grapes marsanne and roussanne have been allowed in a blend] Saint-Joseph is not considered as prestigious as Hermitage or Cote-Rotie but does offer better value for money. The Chave family have been involved in wine making in the northern Rhone since 1481. Jean Louis Chave is the current boss and an exponent of organic viticulture. The domaine is mainly in Hermitage but also operates as a negociant in other AOC's although he has bought some plots in Saint-Joseph.For the 'Offerus ' cuvee grapes come from several sources and about half are from vineyards owned by the Domaine. It is 100% syrah and spends time in oak barrels. I started my bottle last night with my supper of chicken in mushroom sauce and I did enjoy it. There is plenty of a blackcurrant and plum style fruit there, the tannins are soft but hold things together. and there is a slight spicy or peppery aftertaste. In short this is a lovely wine.
