The Chave family have been involved in wine making in the northern Rhone valley since 1481. Jean-Louis Chave is the current boss and an exponent of organic viticulture. The Domaine is mainly in Hermitage but also operates as a negociant in other AOC's although he has bought some plots inb Saint-Joseph.
This is one of those wines in which I tell people, if you don't like this, it's your palate being bad, and you need to adjust to the wine. This I want to leave in my wine locker for 10 years before drinking again. Green, whiteflower, sex pot.
External Reviews for Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage Blanc
One of the oldest and most respected names in French wine, Chave continually garners high praise for the excellent Northern Rhone wines it produces. Founded in 1481, and passed from father to son ever since, the domaine is now headed by young Jean-Louis Chave, a graduate of UC Davis' prestigious oenology program. Chave owns vines in 9 of the 18 vineyards that cover the Hermitage hillside. Keenly aware of the different dynamics fruit from different parcels can have, Jean-Louis pays close attention to the terroir-influences when selecting fruit for this, his top cuvee. He uses little to no oak on his wines, believing that the innate character of the fruit is what makes a truly great wine. In this vein, he intervenes with filtering or fining minimally, if at all. Jean-Louis' 2006 Hermitage Blanc is a study in opulence; tones of nuttiness and flower blend with hints of grilled pear and honey.
"Intense, rich and remarkably focused, this offers stunning purity of fruit, such as Jonagold apple and Cavaillon melon, along with enticing heather honey, roasted macadamia nut, orange blossom and dried persimmon notes, all laid over a dense but brilliantly defined palate. The nearly endless finish of beeswax and buttered brioche is absolutely fantastic. Drink now or hold for a decade. Perhaps the best white produced here to date. Best after 2019. 1,050 cases made." WS "The bottled 2006 Hermitage blanc is remarkably powerful (around 15% natural alcohol), and demonstrates the heights white wine varietals reached in the northern Rhone in 2006. Its sumptuous nose reminds me of a liqueur of white flowers intermixed with notions of truffles, white peaches, honeysuckle, marmalade, and crushed rocks. Dense, full-bodied, and super-powerful as well as flowery, with razor-like focus, this magnificent white Hermitage should drink well for 25-30 years. One of my favorite true and authentic vignerons to visit is the Chave family, located in the tiny, one-horse village of Mauves, just south of Tournon. The son, Jean-Louis, is taking over the reins more and more, but his father, Gerard, is still involved even though he is officially retired. As always, these wines performed brilliantly. Readers should keep in mind that the reviews of the 2007 white Hermitage and 2007 red Hermitage are a matter of extrapolating from tasting all the separate vineyards that go into these wines. That said, the Chaves appear to be ratcheting up their quality level because of a Draconian selection process in the vineyard as well as in the winery. The Chave estate wines' finest value is St.-Joseph (5,000 bottles produced in each vintage), which comes from hillside vines planted in pure schist just outside their home village of Mauves." RP
Predominantly Marsanne with a dollop of Roussanne. Redolent of peaches and nectarines in it's youth with an intensely floral nature Chave's blanc ages into a precise, mineral driven wine that features deep aromatics of heather and lanolin.
Predominantly Marsanne with a dollop of Roussanne, this is simply the greatest white wine from the Rhône Valley. Redolent of peaches and nectarines in it's youth with an intensely floral nature Chave's blanc ages into a precise, mineral driven wine that features deep aromatics of heather and lanolin. Allow it to breath or cellar for years.
