Domaine Isabel Ferrando Chateauneuf du Pape Colombis 2006
"Very juicy, with a racy underpinning to the layers of raspberry ganache, blackberry and fig compote. Shows plenty of sweet spice, with hints of melted licorice, shiso leaf and tobacco. There’s also latent grip on the rather toasty finish. First vintage fermented in an open-top wood vat. From Isabel Ferrando of Domaine St.-Préfert. Drink now through 2023...93." WS 7/08

Very juicy, with a long, gorgeous beam of raspberry ganache running through the middle and mineral, spice, fig cake and dark chocolate flavors filling in the edges. The finish is long and silky. Drink now through 2022.
Dark red. Bright strawberry and raspberry aromas are sharpened by white pepper and baking spices, and show a zesty mineral urgency. Racy, finely etched red fruit flavors are firmed by gentle tannins and finish with excellent cut and length. More energetic than the 2006, which shows the sweetening influence of its new oak today.
The 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape's dark ruby/purple color is slightly more saturated than the 2006's. The wine possesses a well-delineated, sweet nose of black currants, cherries, roasted herbs, lavender, and spice. Ripe, full-bodied, and elegant, with an approachable, creamy texture, this beauty will benefit from 1-2 years of bottle age, and keep for 15 or more years. The personal wines of Isabel Ferrando (also the winemaker at St.-Prefert) are a more elegant, Burgundian take on Chateauneuf du Pape than her efforts at St.-Prefert.
Vivid red. Bright raspberry and cherry-vanilla aromas are complicated by smoky minerals, rose and lavender. Deeper black raspberry and cola on the palate, with tangy minerals adding spine and cut. Suave, finely focused and delicious now but balanced to age.
Bright red. Potent raspberry and candied cherry aromas, with vivid mineral and floral qualities adding energy; this has the elegant bouquet of a Burgundy. Silky and sweet, with graceful strawberry and raspberry flavors, medium weight and a long, sappy finish. In the modern school but in no way overblown.
The 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape looks to be the best Isabel Ferrando has made to date. A beauty, this wine exhibits a dense ruby/purple color to the rim as well as an already gloriously complex bouquet of kirsch, subtle smoked herbs, roasted meats, incense, and copious quantities of black and red fruits. It is full-bodied, with silky tannins and a sexy, supple mouthfeel. Its full-bodied richness and layered finish only add to the pleasure and intensity of this wine, which should be approachable in its youth and last for 15 or more years. Isabel Ferrando is one of many increasingly significant women in the appellation of Chateauneuf du Pape. I would argue that, other than St.-Emilion in Bordeaux, no other place in France has as many capable women in charge of their estates, and they are demonstrating tremendous sensitivity as well as the commitment to turn out world-class wines.
Inky ruby. Fresh, complex bouquet of spicy red berries, cherry, minerals and fresh flowers; there's an appealingly Burgundian quality to this wine. Brisk and focused, with sweet red fruit flavors, silky texture and very fine tannins. The finish is impressively pure and vibrant, with the raspberry note clinging tenaciously.
