One can't be a winemaker without passion: the severity of the elements, the limitless work required by the vines leading to the prestigious results obtained each year demand a special passion - the one that burns within us. The Cotes of Altenberg and Kanzlerberg It was this passion that drove Charles Lorentz senior to bank on it's excellence, in developing his vineyard on the slopes of the Altenburg near Bergheim. The grapes grown in this exceptional terroir have always been vinified separately. Riesling, Pinot-Gris, Gewurztraminer and other Muscats that originate on these slopes demonstrate from vintage to vintage, a unique character. Crisp and well framed white apple fruit greets the nose followed by hints of sweet almond croissants and a touch of peach. Tart and yet gently sweet at the same time, this has a lovely mouthfeel with a light streak of astringency that runs through it. The fruit recalls the nose with tart apples dominating sweeter peachy notes and adding in a touch of pineapple on the back end that leads to a wonderfully firm, mineral and bitter apple laden finish. Rather tense. 88pts
