Domaine Guillemot-Michel Mâcon-Villages 2006
From the back label: With the aim to preserve the soil's life, to enhance the expression of "terroir," and the purity of bouquet, we have chosen to work our 6 hectares of Chardonnay situated in southern Burgundy, according to the rules of Bio-Dynamic agriculture. Our grapes are hand picked and the wine made by us without the addition of cultured yeast or sugar.

The broad, rich, sensual 2002 Macon-Villages sports a boisterous nose of rich minerals, chalk, and tangy limestone. This boldly flavored, satiny-textured, medium-bodied wine is crammed with honeyed minerals, spices, and notes of sap. Drink this beauty over the next 4-5 years. You can bet I will be! While some famed producers of the Cote de Beaune rushed to pick their heralded vineyards in mid-September 2002, Pierrette and Marc Guillemot harvested between the 29th of September and the 5th of October. Is it any wonder that they consistently produce one of the very finest quality to price rapports in white Burgundy?
Attractive green-tinged color. Complex, high-toned, exotic aromas of acacia honey, orange, apricot and licorice. Superconcentrated, pliant, fat and deep, with dense flavors of orange peel, honey, oatmeal and nuts, plus intriguing flinty and smoky nuances. The impression of strong extract is leavened by the wine's firm acidity. (The acids were higher in 2002 than in 2001, noted Michel, and a portion of the malolactic did not take place - the first time this happened here.) This has thrust and force rare for the region. Finishes fat and long; really clings to the palate.
Yellow-gold. Powerfully scented nose displays ripe pear, peach pit, floral honey, nuts and lees. Highly complex in the mouth, with palate-staining orchard and pit fruit flavors and a refreshing bite of lemon pith. Finishes gently sweet, with clinging notes of honey, licorice and toasted grain. This could handle rich, creamy shellfish dishes or washed rind cheeses.
This wine is about as good a Mâcon as one can find, with medium body, terrific fruit (recalling ripe peaches, along with baked apple and pineapple notes), a spicy edge, and excellent acidity. In overall terms, the wine is fresh and linear, but with fruit that is rich and soft, making for a complex experience in flavor, structure and texture.
