Domaine Grand Veneur Cotes du Rhone Reserve Red 2007
93 points Rhone Report: ...shows fantastic dark fruit paired with plenty of edge and cut. Black cherry, cassis, new leather and grilled meat notes are supported by spice and subtle garrigue. Medium to full bodied with nice concentration, lots of pure, textured fruit and a long finish... should drink well over the next 15 years. (Aug 2009)

A candidate for wine of the vintage is Grand Veneur's 2006 Châteauneuf de Pape Les Origines. A dense plum/purple color is followed by an intoxicatingly heady perfume of ground pepper, spice box, garrigue, meat juices, and copious quantities of red and black fruits. In the mouth, it exhibits superb texture, silky tannins, and a long, full-bodied, powerful finish with no hard edges. Consume it over the next 10-15 years.
Ruby-red. Sexy bouquet of cherry-vanilla, blackberry, cola and smoked meat. Fleshy and sweet, with lush red and dark berry compote flavors, velvety texture and slow-building tannins. As inviting as this is right now, it also has the material to reward patience.
The 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Origines may turn out to be one of this estate's finest cuvées, although one should not overlook the 2006 Les Origines. A luxury cuvée sold at a reasonable price, the 2007 boasts a dense blue/purple color as well as a sweet perfume of blueberries, charcoal, creme de cassis, graphite, smoked meats, and herbs. Dense, full-bodied, and exceptionally pure, with a multilayered texture, moderate tannin, and a stunning finish, it will benefit from 2-4 years of cellaring, and should drink well for 20-25.
The 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Origines is one of the vintage's most profound wines. Inky purple to the rim, showing some subtle influence of barriques, the wine has an impressive nose of chocolate, smoke, roasted meats, blueberries, and jammy black cherries with some licorice and smoke. The wine is full-bodied, powerful, but has silky tannins and good acidity. This wine should be drinkable upon release and last for 15 or more years.
The 2003 Châteauneuf du Pape Les Origines is dazzling stuff and one of the vintage's top efforts. Deep purple to the rim with a gorgeous nose of blackberry liqueur intermixed with blueberries, smoke, licorice, roasted meats, and herbs, with wine has fabulous concentration, a multi-layered mid-palate, and a blockbuster finish with sweet tannin and plenty of opulence. Drink it over the next 12-14 years.
Opaque purple. Pungent aromas of blackberry, blueberry, incense and potpourri. Offers brighter red fruits on the palate, with sweet floral pastille and smoky mineral qualities adding complexity. Becomes more energetic on the sappy, precise, very long finish.
Glass-staining violet. Showing a lot of oak on the nose, along with deep raspberry and blackberry scents and a smoky mineral quality. Lush, creamy and rich in the mouth, with sweet red and dark berry compote flavors, slow-building tannins and serious finishing punch. This sexy fruit bomb will be even better if the oakiness recedes with some bottle age.
