Domaine Grand Veneur Châteauneuf-du-Pape les Origines 2009

External Review:

Bright purple. An alluring bouquet displays scents of blackberry and blueberry preserves, cherry-cola and vanillin oak. Broad, supple and densely packed, with sweet flavors of dark berries, floral pastilles and vanilla bean. The intense fruit is more than up to the oak component, which fades away slowly on the long, sappy finish. This sexy wine should provide plenty of immediate appeal on release but is built to age.

In 1320, Pope Jean XXII had the first vines planted in CHATEAUNEUF DU PAPE. But only in 1360 did the vine acquire a certain importance, first with the white wine drunk by Innocent VI, then with red wine; but these products remained little known. Only from the 18th century onward, did the vine occupy the territory and papal wine begin to be famous. In the Jaume family, the generations have perpetuated the profession of winegrower since Mathieu JAUME decided, in 1826, to grow vines in CHATEAUNEUF DU PAPE. The successions were assumed by Marius, Fernand and Roger. In 1979, Alain and Odile JAUME carried on the family tradition with the creation of the GRAND VENEUR WINERY. At the beginning, the vineyard extended over 22 acres. Over time, the vineyard grew to today's figure of nearly 135 acres spread in the CHÂTEAUNEUF DU PAPE, LIRAC, CÔTES DU RHÔNE VILLAGES "Les Champauvins", and CÔTES DU RHÔNE areas. In 2003, a new estate of 35 acres was acquired: the "CLOS DE SIXTE" Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée LIRAC. This appellation located 10 kilometres from Châteauneuf du Pape, is one of the thirteen Crus of the Rhône Valley. Over the years, the family has grown, too. Today, Sébastien and Christophe are gradually taking charge of the management of the estate. Sharing the family know-how, they have to put to maximum advantage their knowledge in wine-growing and wine-tasting. Read less

The 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape Les Origines (45% Grenache, 35% Syrah and 20% Mourvedre) is a polished, medium to full-bodied effort that has superb concentration, lots of tannin, and a ripe, textured feel. Showing plenty of black raspberry, toasted spice, creamy licorice and hints of violets, it’s a classic example of this cuvée that will benefit from a year or two in the cellar, and have no problem evolving gracefully through 2027.

Inky purple. Ripe cherry and dark berry aromas are complicated by notes of spicecake and potpourri. Fleshy and expansive, offering sweet cherry-vanilla and blueberry flavors lifted by juicy acidity. Smooth, harmonious tannins lend shape to an impr... Stephen Tanzers IWC. A Proprietary Blend wine from Rhone in France. 2010 Domaine Grand Veneur Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Les Origines 1500ml

The 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Origines is nearly off the charts in terms of concentration. It is a less sexy, flamboyant effort compared to the 2009, but it is noble, reserved and pure with plenty of black and blue fruit notes intermixed with subt... Robert Parkers Wine Advocate. Racy, offering delicious dark bramble, linzer torte and blackberry notes, with a strong graphite edge coursing through the finish. Gains density and flesh on the finish, which bodes well for the cellar. A modern style, but shows solid grounding in it... Wine Spectator. More edgy and precise than the 07, the 2010 Domaine Grand Veneur Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Origines, a blend of 50% Grenache and close to an even split of Syrah and Mourvèdre that's aged for 18 months in new oak. Showing a touch more wood than the Vie... Rhone Report, The. A Proprietary Blend wine from Rhone in France. 2010 Domaine Grand Veneur Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Les Origines 1500ml

Ruby-red color. Intensely aromatic nose offers potent garrigue scents along with notes of jammy cherry, raw meat, fresh tobacco, bay laurel, licorice and sexy oak spices. Big, dense and sweet, showing intense dark berry flavors with complicating earthy and herbal accents. Focused, concentrated and long - and lovely right now.
