Domaine Grand Veneur Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee les Origines Proprietary Blend Wine 2009

External Review by JJ Buckley Fine Wines:

The 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Origines (1 500 cases produced) is a blend of 50% Grenache a whopping 30% Mourvedre and 20% Syrah with the latter two components spending time in new oak barrels. All of the fruit comes from vines that are nearly 70 years of age. A great wine with an opaque ruby/purple color sensational fruit intensity and notes of graphite lavender licorice lead pencil shavings and subtle smoke it is full-bodied rich and powerful with low acidity and sweet velvety tannin

In 1320, Pope Jean XXII had the first vines planted in CHATEAUNEUF DU PAPE. But only in 1360 did the vine acquire a certain importance, first with the white wine drunk by Innocent VI, then with red wine; but these products remained little known. Only from the 18th century onward, did the vine occupy the territory and papal wine begin to be famous. In the Jaume family, the generations have perpetuated the profession of winegrower since Mathieu JAUME decided, in 1826, to grow vines in CHATEAUNEUF DU PAPE. The successions were assumed by Marius, Fernand and Roger. In 1979, Alain and Odile JAUME carried on the family tradition with the creation of the GRAND VENEUR WINERY. At the beginning, the vineyard extended over 22 acres. Over time, the vineyard grew to today's figure of nearly 135 acres spread in the CHÂTEAUNEUF DU PAPE, LIRAC, CÔTES DU RHÔNE VILLAGES "Les Champauvins", and CÔTES DU RHÔNE areas. In 2003, a new estate of 35 acres was acquired: the "CLOS DE SIXTE" Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée LIRAC. This appellation located 10 kilometres from Châteauneuf du Pape, is one of the thirteen Crus of the Rhône Valley. Over the years, the family has grown, too. Today, Sébastien and Christophe are gradually taking charge of the management of the estate. Sharing the family know-how, they have to put to maximum advantage their knowledge in wine-growing and wine-tasting. Read less

Dark and winey with velvety layers of crushed plum blueberry and anise supported by a strong graphite note and carrying through the long spice- and violet-filled finish. Drink now through 2018. Wine Spectator.

A brilliant wine and an unquestionable success in the vintage the Domaine Grand Veneur Chateauneuf-du-Pape Les Origines is a blend of 50 % Grenache 20 % Syrah and 30 % Mourvedre that s aged for 18 months in new oak casks. Despite this elevage the wine soaks up the oak and delivers a spectacularly pure array of creme de cassis blackberry spice licorice and toast. The purity and freshness are captivating and the wine shows full body beautiful focus a classic firm texture and very silk
