Inky ruby. Fresh raspberry and cherry preserve aromas are complicated by lavender and rose. Smoky herbs come up with air and carry onto the palate, accenting deep red fruit flavors. Nicely focused wine, with an energetic, tangy finish and good persistence.
The 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape is a winner. Inky blue/purple with notes of graphite, blueberry, blackberry, smoke, Provencal herbs and a bit of licorice and pepper, it is deep, full-bodied, with sweet tannins and loads of fruit and glycerin. Drink it over the next 12ndash;14 years.
The 2007 Chandacirc;teauneuf de Pape (70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvandegrave;dre from 65-year old vines) is an exceptionally strong effort. Aged in tank (80%) and small oak barrels (20%), it is a dense, full-bodied wine revealing an inky/purple color along with notes of graphite, blackberries, and cassis. With a sumptuous, layered, full-bodied texture, sweet, velvety tannins, and zesty freshness as well as acidity, it should drink well for 12andndash;14 years.
This is broad-shouldered, with lots of dark olive, fig, currant and beef flavors supported by tarry tannins that show excellent drive through the finish, where extra raspberry and graphite notes linger. Drink now through 2020.
Loaded with dark currant and blackberry fruit, this has sinew, muscle and flesh to its texture along with tar, grilled beef and mineral notes pumping through the finish. Best from 2006 through 2020.
The 2003 Chateauneuf du Papersquo;s deep ruby/purple-tinged color is accompanied by a sumptuous bouquet of kirsch, cassis, licorice, and smoke. With great fruit, a terrific texture, medium to full body, and a heady, opulent, alcoholic finish, it should provide immense pleasure over the next 8ndash;10 years.
