Domaine Giraud Chateauneuf du Pape Premices 2011

External Review by Premier Wine & Spirits:

Bright red. Fresh blackberry, cherry and peppery spices on the nose. Silky, palate-staining dark fruit flavors pick up floral pastille and candied licorice qualities with air and show very good energy. Turns sweeter on the clinging finish, with the cherry and floral notes repeating.

The 'domaine' saw the light of day thanks to Pierre and Mireille's zeal and two families coming together. Pierre Giraud is the son of a long line of winegrowers going back more than six centuries. Descendant of the Arrnenier family, he's always tended his vineyard with loving care. The Buou family owned the village distillery for generations; Mireille has always worked alongside her husband helping to expand the vineyard. Now she looks after the day-to-day running of the Domaine. The story begins in 1974 when Pierre and Mireille took on 4ha (10 acres) of vines as tenant farmers. For 12 years, the domaine would grow little by little through purchasing pieces of rented land. In 1981. Pierre and Mireille turned the family distillery into a winemaking and barrel-ageing cellar. That same year, the domaine 's first vintage would be born. In 1987. the running of the Armenier family's vineyard was handed down to their children. Pierre and Mireille took care of 8ha (20 acres) of 100 year old vines found on the Crau plateau, Les Terres Blanches ('White Earth'), the Gallimardes and the sandy soils around Pignan in the Rayas area. In 1998. Pierre was ready to pass on his love of the vine and wine to his children. Marie and Francois took on the estate hand-in-hand. Under their parents' watchful eye. they devoted themselves to tending vines and winemaking. They focused their efforts on selecting parcel by parcel, doing minimal treatments, upgrading their cellar to make finer and finer wines while respecting family traditions. Read less

From the estate’s younger vines in Chateauneuf du Pape (around 50 year-old vines) and a new cuvee, the 2011 Chateauneuf du Pape Premices is a blend of 100% Grenache that’s aged one-third in 225-liter French oak barrels and the balance in concrete tank for one year. Gorgeous all around and made in a friendly, seamless style that’s hard to resist, it possesses a translucent ruby color that’s followed by a perfumed array of kirsch, raspberry, flowers, and red licorice. Incredibly pure and smooth, with no hard edges and a silk-like texture, it stays light and elegant on the palate and is a joy to drink. It should drink nicely for 5–8 years. Drink now–2019.

A very sleek version, exhibiting delicious cherry paste, raspberry coulis and plum skin notes that ripple along, flecked with accents of red licorice, blood orange and rooibos tea. A sappy feel takes over on the finish. Best from 2014 through 2025.
