Domaine Gerovassiliou Red Blend Epanomi Avaton 2007

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Spicy, minty and fleshy on the nose with aromas of pink peppercorns and toasted nuts over a base of taut red and black fruit that reminds me of red and black raspberry candies. This is dark and tall on entry, really shows lots of height in the mouth and relatively little breadth as it seems tightly wound but offers up plenty of black cherry and black raspberry fruit framed with wood spice and hints of caramel and vanilla. This is rather tight and rigid today with lots of powdery tannins on the palate. It’s both well defined structurally and rather opaque if rich with flavor at the same time. A bit in the Icon Wine style. Obviously has plenty of potential but today this is a bit tough and chewy and while the oak is well integrated it’s presence is definitely felt. 89pts

The wine has an excellent and complex structure. Its blackberry fruit shows spice and depth, finishes dry and is totally individual This state of the art winery is surrounded by 55 hectares of meticulously well cared vineyards on the slopes of Epanomi. It is the brainchild of Vangelis Gerovassiliou who inititated the revival of the family vineyard by planting the nearly extinct Malagousia in 1981. Domaine Gerovassiliou guarantees consistent, high quality wines of international acclaim every year. The low yielding vineyards are cultivated in compliance with ecologically sustainable management practices. Grapes : Limnio 40%, Mavrotragano 30%, Mavroudi 30% Region : Greece / Macedonia / Epanomi PGI Maker : Evangelos Gerovassiliou Notes : The wine has an excellent and complex structure. Its blackberry fruit shows spice and depth, finishes dry and is totally individual. It can be drunk now or laid down. Serve : Interesting partner with hearty stews, savoury dishes, flavoured game dishes ABV : 12.50% Suitable for vegetarians
