Domaine Georges Vernay Condrieu Terrasses de l'Empire 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

Berry Bros & Rudd review:

The grandly named Terrasses de L'Empire is in fact a very grand wine, one of the finest in Condrieu. Only what one would expect from the most respected and historically most influential families in the appellation. Over five hectares of Viognier are farmed in the lieux-dits of Ste Agathe and La Caille, both in the north of the appellation just behind the town of Condrieu itself. The soil is mainly mica-filled granite, with a little schist, and many of the vines are over 50 years of age.

The wine is fermented in old wood, and captures the essence of fine Condrieu, namely a rich nutty viscosity, tempered by an appealing, linear purity, with even a hint of salinity at the back. Terrific!
(Simon Field MW, BBR Buyer)

Domaine Georges Vernay:
GEORGES VERNAY created the family business with 1.5 hectares of AOC Condrieu " Coteau du Vernon " vineyards. Towards the end of the 40's, GeorgesVernay became one of the most ardent defenders and saviours of the Appellation, then about to disappear.
