Domaine Georges Michel Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough la Réserve 2012

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Smoky and nutty on the nose with aromas of cooked chilies, bruised chilies, cut grass and a bit of apricot. Rather fine texturally with a bit of bologna on the palate; smoky, fatty, salty, all cut with mineral edge. The mid-palate offers up cut grass and gooseberry jam flavors that turn berried and a bit nutty on the back end. Sapid, savory finish. 87pts

Former owner of Chateau de Grandmont (a wine estate in the French wine region of Beaujolais/Burgundy), Frenchman Georges Michel was already heartedly enamoured by wine when he and his family decided to move to New Zealand. Domaine Georges Michel was established in 1997 and situated in the 'Golden Mile' which denotes the central route of the Rapaura area, renowned for the production of the best flavored fruit of the Marlborough wine region. The first Sauvignon Blanc was released in 1998 followed by an oak-aged Chardonnay and a Pinot Noir crafted by the prestigious French winemaker Guy Brac de la Perriére, a man from one of Burgundy’s oldest winemaking dynasties. Since 2005 Georges' daughter, Swan, (Bachelor in Oenology and Viticulture - Lincoln University NZ) has headed the winemaking team. The Vineyards, totaling 35 hectares, are 100% winery-owned and currently produce 250 tonnes of fruit annually. They are situated in two blocks, both on the Golden Mile, in the prime Marlborough Terrior and are managed under the watchful eye of our viticulture consultant Daniel Le Brun. Our vineyards produce Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Viognier. Since their very first release, Georges Michel's wines have been awarded numerous national and international Awards including Top Gold Awards in the USA, Asia, Europe and Australia. Today, Domaine Georges Michel wines are exported in 16 different countries and are founds in some of the most prestigious restaurants wine lists and exclusive wines shops throughout the world. The stunning winery and its wines, gift and gourmet shop are open to the public. The vineyard restaurant "La Veranda", a huge Victorian villa, invites you to relax in the tranquil surroundings of the Richmond Ranges. Read less

I tasted the Nuit St Georges 2008 from Michel Chevillon. This wine has a tremendous evolution and is really bad now. there is some muchroom, some oxidation. Way too acid. A long way over the top. The acidity is attacking. Just good to make vinegar. A waste of the money.
