François Lamarche commented that his yields in 2001 averaged only 35 hl/ha, which is low for the vintage and a very low 30 hl/ha for 2002. In 2001, new oak was 50% for the villages wines, 60% for the 1ers and 70% for the grands crus; Lamarche told me that because the yields were so low that in 2002, all wines would be receiving 100% new wood, at least for a large portion of their élevage period. The present plan is to bottle without fining or filtration. I had a chance to update my initial in-bottle impression and this is a wonderfully expression and complex as I originally found it with elegant black fruits and traces of earth but the wood spice has not integrated as well as I had hoped it might. To be sure, this remains a lovely effort with dusty, refined and sophisticated tannins underpinning medium weight, remarkably sappy and pure flavors that display excellent intensity and persistence as well as terrific richness. That said, it remains generously wooded and will appeal most to those who enjoy this character in their burgs.
