Domaine Font de Michelle Chateauneuf-du-Pape Blanc 2012

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

This offers up a classic nose of red cherry fruit accented with an Herbes de Provence nose, red candied licorice tones and a savory sun-dried tomato top note. Still youthful on the palate, this really captures the richness and brightness of the vintage with a smooth, slightly dense texture. Though not quite full-bodied, it is packed with sweet red cherry and toasted spice notes that seep out across the rather long finish. Really well balanced with good depth of flavor though if one wanted to nitpick, it does lack some complexity. 92pts

According to local archives, the Gonnet family has been settled at Bédarrides since 1600… In 1880 Jean Etienne Gonnet built the farmhouse that serves as the headquarters of the estate today. His grandson, Etienne Gonnet, created Font de Michelle in 1950. This 30 hectare vineyard - adjoining land connected all in one lot - is magnificently situated in the southeast of the Châteauneuf du Pape AOC. A mayor of Bédarrides from 1952 until 1964, Etienne Gonnet was an example of perseverance and rigour in his day. Since 1975 his sons, Jean and Michel, have kept watch over the destiny of the estate. For over 30 years their concern has been to improve on wine making methods, to develop full-bodied wines that are concentrated, refined and through which the ‘terroir’ can express all of its qualities and thus, in so doing, elevate the estate’s renown to its highest level. Today, their respective sons, Bertrand and Guillaume, bestow their enthusiasm and skill, in turn. In 2002 the estate expanded with a magnificent 20 ha Côtes du Rhône and Côtes du Rhône Signargues property situated at Domazan in the Gard - La Font du Vent. Parallel to both properties, the limited liability company, Gonnet Pères et Fils, sees to the distribution of the Font de Michelle and Font du Vent wines for the export market. The company also offers, under its own brand, wines from the Rhône valley that it selects with the utmost care. Read less

paler and the bronziest of the bunch – classic nose, intense blackberry jam, tar, floral, saffron, pollen – big in the mouth still with some tannin to burn, slightly low acidity, mint and tarragon tinged cherry and orange rind fruit in the mouth, finish is a touch tough at first but smoothes out and lengthens with airing, turns tarrier and really developes a citrussy lemon verbena/dried citrus peel top note, fleshes out wonderfully with air. CdP at peak and the best of the bunch tonight

Robust, bold wine needs to be partnered with food that it won't overpower. Predominant notes: plum and cherry with a hint of tobacco. Best left to breathe. Delicious.

An elegant wine, with sweet cherry fruit and high floral notes that set the stage for a lush, silky palate infused with notes of raspberry sorbet and fall leaves. Lingering finish of vanilla and baking spices. Imported by Robert Kacher Imports.

A sleeper selection is the sexy 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape. It offers plenty of spice box, fruitcake, and black cherry jam notes along with a creamy texture, and opulent, lush, silky tannins. The vintage’s lack of excessive heat spikes has provided freshness as well as terrific aromatics. Drink it over the next 7–8 years.

High-toned up front, with floral and cherry licorice notes backed by a dash of sandalwood on the slightly dusty finish. Drink now.

Dark red. Fresh red berry are complemented by notes of dried rose, allspice and anise. Energetic raspberry and cherry flavors gain weight with air, taking a turn to deeper plum and bitter chocolate while maintaining vivacity. Soft tannins add structure and carry through the long, spicy finish. This is drinking well already.

Very ripe, with velvety layers of crushed plum and mulled blackberry fruit interwoven with bittersweet ganache, fruitcake and melted licorice. The long, dense, fleshy finish sails on nicely. Approachable now, thanks to the sleek structure, but better with a touch of cellaring. Best from 2010 through 2025.

Classic style of Chateau neuf du Pape in a great vintage and a reasonable price. Reserved nose of dark black fruits, cigar box spice, French oak subtleties and a lively acidity. Nice structure to keep the wine living for another 8 to 10 years. Hard to resist now though.

Red-ruby. Deeper, sweeter, more complex nose features spicy redcurrant, violet pastille, game and underbrush. Dense, sweet and highly concentrated, but with the firm acid structure of the vintage. Finishes very long, with tongue-dusting but fine tannins.
