The history of Sutter Home Winery dates back to the late 1800's, when a Swiss-German immigrant named John Thomann established a small winery and distillery in the heart of California's Napa Valley. Although much has changed for the Trincheros and Sutter Home, the motto and philosophy originated by their father more than a half-century ago remains the same: "A great product for a fair price." After resurrecting Sutter Home in 1948, the Trincheros struggled to keep the family winery afloat, imbuing it with the values of hard work, ingenuity, humility and integrity that have characterized them ever since. Each member of the family played a vital role in keeping the business running: Mother Mary Trinchero kept the books, younger children Vera and Roger helped on the bottling line, while older brother Bob assisted his dad, Mario, and uncle John in cleaning out tanks and barrels. The family's cohesion kept Sutter Home together and eventually made it the success it is today. With its creation of White Zinfandel in the early 1970s and the introduction of high-quality, affordably priced varietal wines during the 1980s and '90s, Sutter Home became a household name and the second largest, independent family-run winery in the U.S. Read less

Bright yellow. Ripe aromas of peach orange zest crushed stone and clove. More chewy and saline than the Dents de Chien but still a rather polite 2011 with its volume leavened by good inner-mouth energy. In an elegant style and very nicely balanced. Really dusts the palate on the saline finish. Stephen Tanzers IWC.

In contrast to the La Riotte where the bouquet was nicely recovered from the bottling and the palate was agitated the Bel Air was still fairly closed from the recent bottling but the wine had snapped nicely back into focus on the palate. As I observed last year the Taupenots parcel in the premier cru of Bel Air are thirty years of age and these vines are now really starting to hit on all cylinders. The reticent nose on the 2011 offers up scents of red and black cherries gamebirds cocoa nutskins lovely soil tones and a touch of cedar. On the palate the wine is back on form after the mise delivering lovely focus and balance in its full-bodied format with ripe tannins tangy acids and a very good core of fruit. This will be lovely. 2021-2050. John Gilman.

The 2011 Greco di Tufo Loggia della Serra impresses for its energy and pure focus. Smoke, slate, crushed rocks and pears are all layered together in a gorgeous, medium-bodied white. All the elements meld together beautifully in this striking, delineated white. There is an understated intensity on the finish that is hugely appealing. The Loggia della Sera is the most complete and harmonious of Terredora’s 2011 whites. Anticipated maturity: 2013–2015.

Grand Barossa Shiraz epitomises the premium international reputation for Shiraz which has made the Barossa Valley famous. Lifted aromas of blackberry, plum and black pepper are accompanied by spicy, dark berry fruits on the palate.

Bright pale yellow. A bit riper on the nose than the Chenevottes offering scents of peach and smoky minerality. Then juicy and nerveux on the palate; not a fleshy wine but has cut and lift. I wanted a bit more concentration and personality though. Finishes with a spicy note. Stephen Tanzers IWC.

Sehr harmonisch. Äusserst eleganter, sehr langer Abgang.

Here the expressive nose offers up plenty of the typical citrus notes that one finds with a classic Ctte de Lichet along with pretty floral and tidal pool nuances. There is good underlying tension to the refined and admirably pure flavors that possess good detail on the dry clean complex and well-balanced finish. Lovely. Burghound.
