Ample scents of fresh berry on the nose carry through on the palate with just a touch of smooth tannins, this is truly a great expression of Rhône Syrah. Drink now or cellar for a few years. Food pairing: red meats, pasta, poultry Flavor type: traditional Body type: full Finish: rich

Grapes from this small northern Rhône estate used to be sold to négociants, but since brothers Eric and Joël Durand began making their own wine in 1991, they have established a track record for excellence — and the banner 2009 Rhône harvest was no exception. This bottling is one of five produced from their holdings in the St.-Joseph and Cornas appellations to earn outstanding scored in the 2009 vintage.

As difficult as it may be to believe, the 2009 Cornas Empreintes ratchets up the level of richness. It exhibits an opaque inky/purple color along with beautiful notes of subtle smoke, incense, roasted meats, ink and burning charcoal embers. Full-bodied as well as powerfully built, structured and tannic, this virile, masculine-styled Cornas demands 5–7 years of cellaring and should drink well over the following 25 years.

The blockbuster 2009 Cornas Empreintes appears capable of 20+ years of longevity. A black/purple color is accompanied by copious aromas of blueberries, blackberry liqueur, charcoal, graphite and subtle smoke and incense. Intense, layered, full-bodied and massive with a hint of tannins (they are largely buried by the wealth of fruit and extract), this 2009 will benefit from 2–3 years of cellaring after its release and should drink well over the following two decades.

A very fleshy Cornas, with layers of plum sauce, spice cake, fig bread and cassis rolling over one another, while the anise and iron notes hang in the background for now. The finish is strong and intense. Best from 2012 through 2020.

Very concentrated, with a large core of crushed plum, currant paste and sweet licorice notes followed by black tea, dark olive and tobacco notes. The long, grip-filled finish pulls everything together. Needs a little time to stretch out. Best from 2009 through 2020.
