Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape White la Crau 2001

Winemaker's Notes:

"Red Wine Bordeaux Blends by Ch. Vieux Ch Certan from Pomerol, France. The dens opaque purple-colored 2001, a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, offers phenomenally sweet aromas of black cherry liqueur intermixed with charcoal, vanilla, new saddle leather, and a hint of fruitcake. It is full-bodied and opulently... "

this is not a quaffing wine. it needs an hour of decanting and MUST be paired with food...we paired it with burritos and it was terrific. I had a chorizo buritto and my wife had a veggie one. Not as full bodied as i had expected but that didn't matter. Lots of oak, but not in a bad way.

Half an hour after opening, the color was translucent, like an Oregon pinot, but brick red, trending strongly to orange near the rim. The nose was lovely, starting wtih coffee, then hazelnut liquor, buttered toast, and blackberries. Blackberries were clear on the palate as well, along with cassis, followed by sage and licorice, all over an underlying mushroom earthiness. Tannins did not show up until the finish, which was long, smooth and had a creamy softness.Three hours after the bottle was opened the nose had changed. It was more obviously earthy with boatloads of chocolate. Blackberries and vanilla cream rounded it out. The three hours made a big difference on the palate, which is now far fruitier, with cherries and blackberries dominating, the mushrooms and sage now in the background. Add strawberry and caramel in the midpalate. This is a very nice wine, even lovely for the price. The finish is still soft, creamy, and long.More tomorrow.Second night now. The wine was open last night for about 5 hours, then closed with a Vacuu-Vin stopper. It is still tremendously aromatic, even more floral than last night. Lavender is coming through along with black currant, blackberries and pepper. Plenty of black fruit and plums on the palate, perhaps even a tiny touch of cranberry, along with a pinch of pepper. That said, it is far more one-dimensional than last night, giving its initial fruit and not much to follow. There is also that slighly oxidized bruised plum taste you get in a wine that is over the hill. Not, mind you, blatant port-like oxidation, merely a sense of flatness and age. Conclusion? This was a good wine, even a great wine with the QPR, on the first night. The second night is was on its way down hill. That probably means it is ready to drink now but right now. Don't leave this in

Really awesome when first released, so much so that I remember it in 2010. Rich, perfectly balanced fruit and tannin, lovely smooth mouth feel, and long fragrant finish. One of the few California cabs I really like - with properly balanced tannins so that you don't feel like you're chewing on barrel innards.

This single vineyard plot comes to us from the renowned winery in Rioja, CVNE. Aged in new French barrique and produced from their own Tempranillo grapes grown on the Vi¤a Real property near Logro¤o, Spain, this wine will seduce you with every sip.

Combine old vines, traditional winemaking and the stunning 2001 season — then wait nine years. What you end up with is a wine built in four dimensions, the power and density of fruit rounded by time, the graceful hand of the winemaker capturing the season in subtle scents of rose and cherry-skin tannin. Everything about the wine is gentle while remarkably long, set to develop for another nine years or more.

The 2001 Vina Tondonia Reserva is bridled with a lovely nose of decayed red fruit, fireside hearth, a touch of mulberry and small red cherry. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, crisp red fruits (wild strawberry and cranberry) with a sharp, vibrant, tense, tannic finish that has immense precision. There is a slight saline note lingering in the mouth after the wine has (regretfully) departed. Drink now-2030+.

The Cabernet Sauvignon offers up a briery, cedary, tobacco leaf-tinged black currant fruit flavor in a medium-bodied, slightly oaky style. There are 100,000 cases produced of this reliable, but unexciting red. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. The 2001 Magnificat is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot. It displays more force, depth, and delineation than the 2000, in addition to copious quantities of toasty oak, sweet, chunky, chocolaty, black currant flavors, and a medium-bodied, easy-going personality. It should drink well for a decade.

Medium-full ruby. Youthfully austere aromas of bitter cherry, raw currant, tobacco leaf, licorice and shoe polish. Dense, fresh and concentrated, with cool black fruit flavors complicated by an herbal nuance. Quite backward today, but already shows l... Stephen Tanzers IWC.
