Domaine du Vieux Lazaret Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Exceptionnelle Prearrival 2007

External Review by Premium Wine & Spirits:

Hugely toasty and oaky, and yet the wine never seems too extreme given the intensity of the cherry fruit. It’s full bodied, lush and supple, with a long, mouthwatering finish. Drink now–2019.

Perhaps the finest wine I have ever tasted from Jerome Quiot is Vieux Lazaret’s 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Exceptionnelle. This fabulous wine boasts an inky/ruby/purple color as well as a sweet nose of cassis, black raspberry liqueur, spring flowers, and hints of graphite and truffles. It is deep, ripe, full-bodied, rich, and multidimensional with a stunningly long, 45+ second finish. Give it 2–3 years of bottle age, and consume it over the following two decades.

The 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Exceptionnelle may be the finest wine Quiot has yet produced. This deep, profoundly concentrated effort boasts a dense ruby/purple-tinged color as well as a gorgeous perfume of raspberry and cherry liqueur intermixed with notions of licorice, flowers, and spice. Full-bodied and unctuously-textured, with high levels of glycerin and alcohol as well as tremendous purity, this is a terrific, full-throttle, palate-staining, impeccably well-balanced Chateauneuf du Pape that can be drunk in 2-3 years, or cellared for 12-15.

Very lush and ripe, with plum, fig and raspberry fruit flavors that melt over fine-grained tannins, leaving spice, cocoa, sweet smoke and mineral notes behind on the lengthy finish. Drink now through 2020.

Has a solid core of blackberry, melted licorice and coffee flavors, with hints of briar and currant paste on the mineral- and earth- driven finish. There's solid, latent grip. This fleshes out as it airs. Best from 2010 through 2020.

The 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Exceptionnelle has turned out to be significantly better than I thought last year when I tasted it prior to bottling. The greatest wine Quiot has ever made in my opinion, this wine shows a dense ruby/purple color and a gorgeous nose of camphor, blackberry, kirsch, some roast beef and Provencal herbs. Full-bodied with great intensity, beautiful purity, a multi-dimensional mouthfeel, and a spectacular finish of close to a minute, this is a fabulous effort from Quiot and should drink well for close to two decades.

WA 92-94 WE 91pts. - According to the Wine Advocate: Perhaps the finest wine I have ever tasted from Jerome Quiot is Vieux Lazaret s 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Exceptionnelle. Give it 2-3 years of bottle age, and consume it over the following two decades. This continues to be the top estate in the Jerome Quiot portfolio. These wines are made in a quasi-modern style with gorgeous levels of fruit as well as superb purity, but the taster never doubts this is a Chateauneuf du Pape, not Burgundy or Bordeaux.
