Domaine du Pere Caboche Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2002

I bought this bottle of wine from the website www.bidforwine.co.uk/auctions/show/39312.Chateauneuf-du-Pape was the very first AOC created when that system was set up in 1932.It is located in the Avignon/Orange area of the southern Rhone valley where it is the most prestigious appellation.Chateauneuf-du-Pape roughly translates as 'the Pope's new palace' because in the 14th century Pope John 22nd built himself a new home [now derelict but a tourist attraction] and also took a great interest in the viticulture of the region although wine had been made here since before the Romans.Even today the papal coat of arms is engraved on every bottle.Domaine Pere Caboche [www.domaineperecaboche.com] is owned and run by the Boisson family who have been involved in wine-making since the 18th century and are well known in the area.Jean-Pierre was at one time the Mayor of Chateauneuf-du-Pape.The wine consists of 60%grenache,25%syrah10%mourverde and the rest made up of small amounts of every grape variety allowed in the AOC.I started my bottle last night with my roast chicken and I enjoyed it.There is plenty of a blackcurrant and plum style fruit there and the tannins, although soft and unobtrusive give it a structured and reserved feel. The well known wine critic,Robert Parker likes this wine.I thought it superb so I gave it top marks

Domaine du Père Caboche:
For generations my family has been both wine growers and blacksmiths. My father Théophile Boisson was orphaned when he was only three years old, hence he was unable to train to as a blacksmith. Fortunately his mother helped foster a keen interest in grapes and wine, that led to him becoming a wine maker. The family nickname of “Caboche” derives from the old Provencal word for horseshoe nails, by which our estate is still known.
