The story behind the Domaine de Pegau begins in the late 17th century with our ancestors farming a few small fields of vines bordered with olive and cherry trees. The revenue from the cherries sold in the local provençal markets covered the costs of working the vineyards. The olives and their golden oil were for family consumption, whilst the grapes went into producing the already famous red wine of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The grape picking was family work which took place in an ambience of light-heartedness and fun but with a respect for quality and even then a vigerous selection of the best grapes. At the end of the row the horse waited patiently for the moment when he felt the wooden paniers gorged with grapes weighing down his cart. Once at the winery the grapes were liahtlv Dressed to break the skins - foulé, (the word means literally press by stepping on), the whole bunches were put in trie vats and then the wine-making took place over a period of 15 days. Times have changed, but this traditional style of wine-making is continued today at the Domaine de Pegau. Read less

One of the finest efforts of the vintage is the 2004 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvée Reservée. There is no Cuvee da Capo in 2004, and as my commentary will make clear, they decided not to produce one in 2005. The 2004 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvée Reservée has a dark plum/garnet/purple color and a big, sweet nose of kirsch liqueur, lavender, roasted herbs, and beef juices intermixed with some licorice and spice. It is full-bodied, rich, deep, spicy, and dense with some tannins in the finish. The wine is not as accessible as many 2004s, and I would opt for cellaring it for 3-4 years and drinking it over the following 15-20. It's a gorgeous effort for the vintage.

Wonderfully fragrant and impressively ripe. What Chacirc;teauneuf is all about mdash; plenty of wet earth, mineral, plum, sweet tannins and sweet fruit. A cascade of pleasure, full-bodied and long on the sparkling finish. Drink now through 2015.

Ruby-red color. Ripe, pungent aromas of smoky red berries and plum tinged with rose, lavender and black olive. Sweet and fat in the mouth, with creamy red berry flavors and a strong note of plum liqueur. Finishes very sweet and long, with supple tannins and a lingering impression of dried flowers.

The 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Reservee (of which I was lucky to find a magnum on a Paris bistrorsquo;s wine list a week after my tasting at the estate) is a brilliant effort that ranks alongside the colossal 2003 Cuvee Reservee. A blend of approximately 85% Grenache, 8ndash;9% Syrah, and the rest Mourvedre and other varietals from 50ndash;100+ year old vines aged in foudre, it exhibits a dense plum/purple color along with a big, sweet bouquet of beef blood, grilled herbs, barbecue smoke, lavender, sweet cassis and kirsch and a hint of Asian soy. The wine possesses a fabulous texture, a full-bodied mouthfeel and a seamless integration of tannin, acidity and alcohol. Certainly the alcohol level is pushing 16% in this wine. With extraordinary texture and unctuosity, this remarkable effort should drink well for 20+ years yet be very appealing in its youth given the glycerin, velvety texture, and remarkable complexity.

Syrah component, tasted from a barrique: Impressive saturated medium ruby. Ripe, gamey and deep on the nose. Penetrating acidity contributes to an impression of power. From foudre (grenache with a bit of syrah): Full medium ruby. Liqueur-like aromas of red fruits, spices and herbs. At once powerful and creamy in the mouth; really stuffed with ripe fruit. Silky and deep, with sound acidity and big, spreading tannins. The Ferauds worked a trade with a neighboring estate, and will be able to include 20% syrah in the ultimate blend.

Saturated red. Impressively complex scents of red and dark berries, cherry, leather and garrigue, with smoky minerals and dried flowers adding interest. Juicy raspberry and blackcurrant flavors pack serious punch and are seriously concentrated but there's a real elegance to this wine. Licorice and candied flowers echo on the long, sappy finish. This looks to be as good as the superb 2005 today.
