What to Expect

Rhone Blends are generally based on Grenache, though some blends may be predominantly Syrah or Mourvedre. The fact that these wines are blends gives the winemakers unusual flexibility in creating a finished wine. In the Southern Rhone Valley of France the styles can range from light, fruity, soft Cotes du Rhone to big, bold, age worthy Chateaunuef-du-pape. This blend is also very popular in Australia and the United States where they frequently go by the Moniker GSM (Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre) and exhibit the rich, bold fruit that both countries are famous for.

Winemakers Notes

This wine is a story born in 1998 and re-edited for 2000. It is a return to the symphony of the 13 grape varieties of Chateauneuf-du-Pape, each of which was considered to bring in their own register, a different gustatory note to the wine. (As each note of the partition by the famous jazz composer D. Piestrup is part of the finished song). Selected from the oldest fields where the 13 varieties were always planted side by side, the wine is still in the large wooden casks where it has seemingly stopped its evolution and is giving nothing away. This is often the case with these massive wines. As yet we feel read more...it has only revealed half of its personality, certainly it is powerful, silky and fat with a large palette of fleshy, black fruits and notes of liquorice, which in time will develop into a more complex and spicy bouquet.    (hide)
