Domaine du Pegau Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2011
Winemaker's Notes:
"...one of the stars of the vintage. Exhibiting a surprisingly deep purple color, it is a seductive, open-knit, precocious, sexy example with decent acidity, sumptuous fruit and delicious, mature flavors of roasted herbs, kirsch, black currants, raspberries, licorice and incense. This beauty should be one of the top wines of this less heralded vintage...90-93" WA

External Reviews for Domaine du Pegau Chateauneuf-du-Pape

The Domaine de Pegau is a family owned winery. Laurence Feraud has taken over the 50 acre estate from her father Paul and they continue to produce some of the most outstanding wines in Chateauneuf du Pape. This is their Cuvee Reservee which every vintage is a true triumph. Robert Parker scored it 90-93 and the Wine Spectator scored this 93 points saying "This shows an enticing bay leaf note, with juicy blackberry and black currant fruit up front, followed by melted licorice and a tarry edge on the finish, underscored by a roasted alder accent. This has the friendly, racy fruit of the vintage, with some distinct character to boot. Best from 2014 through 2025."

An alluring and deeply fruited bouquet leads into a tarry entry with deep fruit that washes across the palate. Ample softness and minerality provides complexity to the fruit-driven core. Very Pegau and a quintessential example of the 2011 Chateauneuf vintage. Polished and much less wild than the 2010 (tasted just after this) with tremendous depth. Drink 2014-2020+ Cory Gowan.

Deep ruby. Ripe black and blue fruit aromas are complicated by potpourri incense and licorice with a smoky topnote. Sappy focused dark berry and bitter cherry flavors are sharpened by juicy acidity and show very good depth. Lots of fruit here but there s good structure as well. Finishes sweet and long with velvety tannins adding shape. As with the 12 there s a degree of elegance to this wine and less of the wild edge of the Pegaus of a few vintages back.
