Domaine du Mas Blanc Banyuls Blanc 2005

Member Review by duncan 906:

I bought this bottle of wine from the website www.bidforwine.co.uk/auctions/show/44391 for 8.50.Banyuls is an AOC created in 1936,although viticulture in the area goes back centuries, for red and white fortified wines from around the Mediiterranean seaside town of that name between Perpignan and the Spanish frontier. The borders of the AOC are the same as those for the Collioure AOC.Domaine du Mas Blanc is owned by Jean Michel Parce and has been in his family since 1639.He has 20 hectares under vine on several plots and makes red and white wines under both the Banyuls and Collioure AOC's.My bottle is the white Banyuls [most production is red] and is made up of 70% grenache blanc,25% muscat and 5% malvasia and has spent 12 months in oak barrels[AOC rules would dictate 30 months if it was a grand cru Banyuls].Grape fermentation was stopped by the addition of spirit and that is why the wine has acheived 16.5% ABV.I drank my bottle with a plate of bread and cheese and I have to say that I liked it.It has to be the sweetest wine I have ever tasted, reminding me of honey or syrup and the fruit is like apricots or pineapple. This is certainly an unusual wine but it is pleasant and drinkable
