Domaine du Grand Tinel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Alexis Establet 2007

Member Review by dynowine:

Tested at 70 deg F on a well-aired bottle, 2 to 3 hours. Interesting nose of unwashed socks, animal fur, drying or smoked meat. In the mouth tastes like aged gamay on steroids, deep rich dark and red fruit mixed in with earthy, meaty, and stony mineral elements. Finishes slightly warm (alcohol?) and with cooling spice together with mid-palate elements fading. Wow. Dry. Body medium, acid medium, tannin medium. 80% grenache.

Dark ruby. Ripe black raspberry and cherry on the nose, with complicating notes of rose, incense and smoky minerals. Brighter red fruits join the dark berries on the supple, sweet, seamless palate. This appealing wine displays good back-end lift and lingering dark fruit character.

This is solidly built, with a very enticing core of crushed raspberry and boysenberry fruit held together by mouthwatering acidity. Plenty of spice, fruitcake and aged tobacco notes flitter through as well. Drink now through 2025.

The brilliant 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Alexis Establet (100% Grenache from 100-year-old vines from a parcel situated in the northern end of Chateauneuf du Pape known as La Gardiole) is one of the finest wines this estate has ever made. A saturated ruby/purple color (surprising given the fact that the 100% Grenache was aged primarily in small oak) is followed by fabulous levels of concentration, rich, ripe fruit, good freshness and vibrancy (because of the lack of any excessive heat during the growing season), plenty of pepper, licorice, grilled Provencal herbs, and exceptional levels of red and black fruits. The tannins are silky, the wine is broad and savory, and the finish lasts nearly a minute. Drink this super wine over the next 15–20 years.
