Food Pairings for Domaine du Cayron Gigondas
I paid $32 for this bottle in 2009 from FWI and see they have raised their price to $37.50. This might be the finest Rhone I have ever had at this price point. Coate also rates it in his "finest" category, incidentally. Thus I loved it and will give it five glasses--for the price, of course, but even on an absolute scale it is very, very good. You will have to spend a great deal more to match it.

The funky 1999 Gigondas possesses an opaque plum/purple color as well as kinky notes of incense, roasted meats, sausage, herbs, licorice, truffles, and black cherries. Its full-bodied and super-rich, with copious glycerin, no hard edges, and a 30+ second finish. This sumptuous, old style Gigondas is filled with personality. Drink it over the next 10-12 years.
Juicy and well-detailed, with plum, crushed black cherry, black tea and red licorice notes backed by a vibrant, minerally finish. There's good length and cut. Drink now through 2016.
Lush and appealing, with fresh and focused red and blackberry character. Medium-bodied, clean and lively. The tannins clamp down on the finish, but give it some time. Best from 2003 through 2010.
Deep red. An impressively complex bouquet offers aromas of raspberry, cherry, apricot, nutmeg and potpourri, with a gentle smoky note adding interest. Supple, seamless red and dark berry flavors stain the palate, with tangy minerality providing bite. The apricot note echoes through the long, spicy finish. A very intriguing wine.
This rustic, traditionally-styled Gigondas is normally a blend of 70% Grenache, 15% Syrah, and the rest Cinsault and a touch of Mourvèdre. A sexy, Provençal fruit bomb, the 2000 Gigondas exhibits notes of dried Provençal herbs, licorice, kirsch, smoke, and incense. Old hippies take notice. There is good fat and flesh along with low acidity, and a precocious, flamboyant personality. Drink it over the next 7-8 years.
Bright ruby-red. Musky, reduced aromas of raspberry, game, leather and roast coffee. Lush, sweet and easygoing, with compelling flavors of red berries, chocolate, game, truffle and spices. A big boy, with lovely concentration of fruit and plenty of tannic support. Long and lush on the back end. A very promising '99.
