Domaine du Caillou Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

The property came in possession of the Pouizin family in 1956. Until 1996 the property was run by Claude Pouizin, who until 1993 sold most of his yield to negociants. In 1996 his daugther Sylvie and son-in-law Jean-Denis Vacherons came in charge and the quality of the wines from property rapidly went up. Wine experts especially from USA discovered the new style of the wines and prices and export rose quickly. In the spring 2002 Jean-Denis Vacherons was killed in a traffic accident. Today Sylvie runs the property. She gets help from clever people as the wine maker Bruno Gaspard and the oenolog Philippe Cambie and the quality of the wines are thus in safe hands.

For the price, you will not find a better Cotes du Rhone - smooth and fruity, but with enough structure to stand up to a decent dinner. I prefer it is a social sipping wine with friends, but in any case, this is one of those $20 bottles that tastes like five times that much.

Opaque purple. A head-spinning bouquet displays potent blackberry, boysenberry, pipe tobacco, garrigue, incense and mineral qualities. Velvety, palate-staining dark berry flavors are sweetened by notes of cola and candied licorice, with a strong whip... Stephen Tanzer's IWC. Domaine du Caillou's top cuvee is always the Chateauneuf du Pape Clos du Caillou Reserve, and the 2007 boasts a dense purple color as well as an exquisite perfume of graphite, camphor, black currants, black cherries, raspberries, and notions of licor... "The prodigious 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Quartz (85% Grenache aged totally in foudres and the rest Syrah, which is aged in small barrels) has terrific floral, raspberry, and black cherry notes intermixed with a striking minerality and precision. A Musigny grand cru Burgundian style of wine, with power and elegance, a thoroughly compelling flavor profile, and a rich, intense finish, the tannins are sweet and the well-integrated acidity gives uplift to the wine. Stunningly proportioned yet never heavy, this is a sensational wine that should only get better over the next few years and last for 15 or more. A small but sensational estate (just under 25 acres), Le Clos du Caillou came to my attention when the property was acquired in the mid-1990s by Jean-Denis Vacheron and his wife Sylvie. After a succession of brilliant wines, Jean-Denis was tragically killed in an automotive accident in 2002, leaving his widow to run the estate with the assistance of two terrific oenologists from Chateauneuf du Pape, Bruno Gaspard and Philippe Cambie, who started in 2001 (coincidentally, when I gave a perfect score to their Reserve Chateauneuf du Pape). It has taken a few years to get the estate back to the level that existed there between 1998 and 2001, but that has certainly been accomplished over recent vintages. All three Chateauneuf du Papes in 2007 merit significant attention. )" RP
