Domaine Drouhin Pinot Noir 2015

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Earthy on the nose with a slight hardness to the autumnal, forest floor notes that cover the jammy and yet not sweet core of fruit. This is very savory and very quinine- and floral-scented. Big acids on entry but they are joined by some slightly astringent red fruits that fill the mouth, lending this a fine texture. This remains a bit lean on the mid-palate, but with good aromatic intensity to the complex, spicy red fruit. The wine finishes a bit short and raw. This needs some time to fully integrate. 88pts

Domaine Drouhin has been on the viticultural cutting edge in Oregon since our first plantings, and we continue to set the pace. The 90 acres of hillside vineyards that ribbon our 225-acre estate are at the very heart of Domaine Drouhin wines. Philippe Drouhin is in charge of all of the estate vineyards in Oregon & Burgundy & it is his vision & passion that drives our advances & improvements in winegrowing year after year. Situated atop the Dundee Hills, between 400 and 800 feet in elevation, our site was selected for its remarkable similarity in climate, latitude and aspect to the legendary vineyards of Burgundy. DDO places more emphasis on viticulture than most producers in America. Our vines are perhaps the most densely-planted in the New World, with an average of 3,300 plants to the acre. We are also one of the few vineyards in the country to cultivate our own rootstocks and propagate all of our own plant materials. This allows us to further our vineyards with site specific rootstocks and plants. Read less

I actually enjoyed this for its subtlety but my husband strongly disliked it for what he called its grape skin finish. It was in the side of too subtle, being fairly unremarkable. For the price, I expected way more. Not what I remembered of the Dundee hills wineries!

Pale garnet color. Raspberry, strawberry, and violets on the nose, as well as some earthy and black pepper notes. Mid-plus acidity, mid-minus tannins, and high alcohol (14.1% abv). On the palate there is some sweeter notes (red cherry), probably in part due to the relatively high alcohol. Overall this is a very well balanced and pleasant, though not overly complex, wine. Will benefit from some more bottle-aging.

The nose presents bright cherry and intense small red berry notes, with just a hint of spice. With a lush and round mouthfeel, this wine is very balanced, as well as its elegantly long finish.

Open and immediately accessible, this is fragrant and gently floral, with clearly defined varietal character. It opens beautifully into an elegant, aromatic and crisply structured wine, with excellent length. Wine Enthusiast. A cooler vintage in the Willamette Valley meant Domaine Drouhin had to take special care of their Pinot Noir in the 2010 vintage. Bright red fruit and racy acidity are the hallmarks of this excellent just released wine.

Deep color and excellent clarity. Aromas of rose petals, violets and spices. On the palate, the texture is lush and mouth-coating, but well-balanced. Refined, silky tannins are noted on the finish.

Deep and vibrant, with brilliant color and excellent clarity. Aromatically, the wine is quite open, even opulent 09 a mix of velvety rose petals, violets and spices. On the palate, the texture is lush and mouth-coating, but well-balanced. Together, they provide definition and intensity, followed by refined, silky tannins. The finish is quite long, with beautiful cherry notes.
