What to Expect

Oregon has only recently emerged as a source for premium wine and is winning fans over to their somewhat earthy style of Pinot Noir. With vineyards a bit cooler than most of California's, yet warmer still than Burgundy, Oregon's Pinot Noirs feature a synthesis of ripe fruit, ripe structure and transparency that draws on the strengths of both. The wines tend to have a touch of earthiness and a sense of transparency that many Pinots from California lack yet the fruit profile, full of dark berries, is decidedly warm-climate in nature.

Winemakers Notes

"In complete contrast, the 2005 Pinot Noir Laurene has an expressivenose of smoky black cherry and blackberry fruit. On the palate itexhibits the elevated acidity and firm structure typical of thevintage, but also a wide and deep band of succulent of silky, spicy, red and black fruits, excellent balance, and a long, pure finish. Giveit 5-7 years in the cellar and drink it through 2027. DomaineDrouhin has been on a roll since the 2002 vintage. Dare I say it, thewinery seems to be making better wine in Oregon than they are in France."93 pointsJay Miller, eRobertParker.com # 173, Oct 2007"Dark read more...

Reviews

Berry Bros & Rudd review: Named after Véronique Drouhin's elder daughter, Laurène is ourflagship wine, and is produced entirely from Pinot Noir grown on the family'sestate in the Dundee Hills. All of the fruit is handpicked into smalltotes, destemmed, fermented with indigenous yeasts, and then placed intobarrels (French oak, never more than 20% new). True to the vintage, the 2005Cuvée Laurène is a deep, densely knit, almost brooding wine.(David Berry Green, BBR Buyer)

True to the vintage, the 2005 Cuvee Laurene is a deep, densely knit, almost brooding wine.  Complex and complete, the '05 has excellent structure and balance, and it is clear that patience will be very well rewarded.  In contrast to the 2004, which was softer, more immediately floral, and tipped to the red-fruit spectrum, the 2005 Laurene is darker and carries a more serious air.  Notes of black fruits and spice are clearly present.  The body is rich and the finish long, suggesting a minimum ageing potential of 10 or more years.
