Domaine Drouhin Beaune Premier Cru Clos des Mouches 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

93+ points John Gilman (View From the Cellar): The 2010 Clos des Mouches is going to be a great wine in the fullness of time, and having just drunk the magical 1978 a few years ago, it certainly seems like the second coming of that wine is embodied in this beautiful 2010. The red fruity bouquet is deep, pure and very primary, offering up a classy mix of cherries, a bit of beetroot, woodsmoke, herbs, coffee, a very complex base of soil and a touch of new wood. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and very pure on the attack, with a refined, but reserved style, a sappy core and outstanding length and grip on the focused and ripely tannic finish. A great Clos des Mouches in the making. 2018-2050+. (Nov/Dec 2011)

Domaine Drouhin has been on the viticultural cutting edge in Oregon since our first plantings, and we continue to set the pace. The 90 acres of hillside vineyards that ribbon our 225-acre estate are at the very heart of Domaine Drouhin wines. Philippe Drouhin is in charge of all of the estate vineyards in Oregon & Burgundy & it is his vision & passion that drives our advances & improvements in winegrowing year after year. Situated atop the Dundee Hills, between 400 and 800 feet in elevation, our site was selected for its remarkable similarity in climate, latitude and aspect to the legendary vineyards of Burgundy. DDO places more emphasis on viticulture than most producers in America. Our vines are perhaps the most densely-planted in the New World, with an average of 3,300 plants to the acre. We are also one of the few vineyards in the country to cultivate our own rootstocks and propagate all of our own plant materials. This allows us to further our vineyards with site specific rootstocks and plants. Read less

This is dark and oaky on the nose with lots of high-class wood, a touch of smoky minerality and a back note of gaminess, all wrapped in very ripe dark cherry and blue pinot fruit that screams New World. Round and plump if quite silky in the mouth with soft tannins and well-integrated acidity supporting dark fruit that is accented with briar notes and obvious wood in the mouth. The mid-palate seems a bit hollow, though there is fine length here, even if it is spiced and sweetened by the wood. Not what I look to Burgundy for. 87pts

Drouhin s 2010 Beaune Clos des Mouches is a gorgeous wine endowed with considerable depth and richness. Suave tannins provide the backdrop for the fruit in this layered Clos des Mouches. Today the aromas and flavors are a bit reticent; instead it is the wine s texture than stands out most. I will not be surprised if the 2010 ends up considerably better than this note suggests. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2029. -Antonio Galloni Robert Parkers Wine Advocate.
