Domaine des Tourelles Marquis des Beys Red 2011

Winemaker's Notes:

*93 Points "The best wine in Lebanon?" James Suckling, October 2015* (2011 Vintage) Domaine de Tourelles is amongst the longest-established and most highly acclaimed wineries in the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon. Founded in 1868 by French adventurer François-Eugène Brun Domaine, de Tourelles was the first commercial cellar in Lebanon producing wines, arak and other spirits. Produced from specially selected parcels of Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, this is densely packed and concentrated with blackcurrants and chocolate yet retains freshness and spice and a very Lebanese flavour. A classic Lebanese red with hints of cassis and cedar. Herb roasted lamb shank should be ideal with this wine. “This is very balanced and refined with cedar and sandalwood undertones as well as bright, ripe fruit. Full-bodied and compacted. Very polished and delicious. A blend of cabernet sauvignon and syrah. The best wine of Lebanon? Drink now” 93 Points, James Suckling, October 2015

The origin ot Domaine des Tourelles goes back to the 19th century joining the history of Lebanon's Bekaa Valley Francois-Eugene Brun, founder of the Tourelles wine property, was born in Chezery (Ain - France). The young military engineer left his village for Marseille where he established himself. A few years later, he was hired by an Ottoman company working on the opening of the Beirut-Damascus road. On this occasion, Francois-Eugene went to Lebanon and settled cown in a small village called Chtaura in the Bekaa Valley. Fascinated by the beauty of the green valley that reminded him of his homeland, Brun established in 1868 the Domaine des Tourelles to make of it the first commercial winery in Lebanon producing wines, arak (the famous Lebanese alcoholic drink), and other liquors. The growth and the development of the distillery were boosted by a considerable demand for the cellar's products; taking profit of the strategic position of Chtaura as an indispensable halt for the Beirut-Damascus travelers, Francois-Eugene Brun founded the Hostellerie Brun next to his wine property His passion for wine making made of him the pioneer of this just-born Lebanese industry and his reputation rapidly beat the local dimension by collecting gold, silver and bronze medals in international wine exhibitions. As the years passed, the Brun generations perpetuated the tradition by keeping the artisan way of production that made the quality of Domaine des Tourelles' products and trademark's reputation. Pierre-Louis Brun (3rd generation), the last descendant of the French dynasty, died in 2000. The property was then inherited by his cousins living in Paris and the French New Caledonia who sold it to Nayla Kanaan Issa el-Khoury, a relative to Brun's widow Margot and Elie F. Issa, an engineer and an old friend of the Brun family. The strategic vision of the new owners has preserved the century-old winery spirit. Their mission is to grant to the local and international clients the pleasure of an authentic experience. Today, Domaine des Tourelles' products are the result of a combination between the modern enterprise concept and the traditional process of a legendary property that claims the most prestigious arak and the oldest wine distillery in Lebanon.
