Domaine des Malandes eschews the use of ageing in wood in order to preserve the unique flavors that Chablis’ Kimmeridgian soil imparts on the wine. Their Premier Cru Côte de Lechet comes from an east-facing vineyard that lies on a mixture of calcareous and clay soils. It produces intensely mineral wines with good fruit intensity. 2004 was a classic vintage in Chablis.

Domaine des Malandes is owned by Lyne and Jean-Bernard Marchives; Lyne comes from a family that has lived in the area for centuries. Their vineyards produce a variety of wines ranging from Petit Chablis to Chablis Grand Cru that are frequently among the top-rated Chablis. Clive Coates M.W., an English wine critic who specializes in French wines, calls Domaine des Malandes a “star” of Chablis. Their wines are fermented and aged entirely in stainless steel (no wood) and have great mineral character. The Wine Messenger has featured the wines of Domaine des Malandes for the last decade, and they keep getting better.
Chablis is an isolated part of Burgundy, 100 miles closer to Paris than the Côte d’Or. A century ago, vineyards covered the region between Chablis and the rest of Burgundy but pests, marginal weather, and the expansion of winegrowing in Southern France led to the demise of this area’s wines. However, the crumbly limestone soil (called Kimmeridgian) near the village of Chablis is still planted with Chardonnay vines. Here, at the northernmost limit of successful grape growing, due to frosty spring weather, some of the world’s finest and most distinct white wines are made.

Characteristic light golden color. Very aromatic with apple blossom, honeydew and grapefruit aromas. Full-bodied, very dry and mineral with great white fruit sensations. Very long, fruity finish of citrus and green apples. Young, can age 5 to 7 years and will develop complexity. Ideal with white meats, fish, light cheeses, or salads.

I'm a big fan of the Malandes wines. This is another great one - fantastically crisp and mineral, perfect with seafood. To be honest I'd usually go for the cheaper one, this one may be better, but the straight chablis represents better qpr.
