What to Expect

Chablis is a region of France's Burgundy region responsible for some of the most distinctive expressions of the Chardonnay grape. On the limestone rich soils of the area, Chardonnay produces wines that can be steely, yet rich with orchard fruits and mineral tones. Unlike the typical white Burgundy, most Chablis sees little or no new oak which allows the grape to express itself with a purity that barrel aging can obscure. Often quite reticent in their youth, Chablis may require several years of ageing in order to be able to fully express the depth and richness it keeps in reserve.

Reviews

Rating: 94/100 - As reviewed by The Wine Messenger Domaine des Malandes top wine. A magnificent Chablis that can age for a decade.

This magnificent Chardonnay is golden in color, with an elegant and powerful mineral and fruit nose with scents of white apple blossom. It is full-bodied with good structure and acidity and has a fantastic mouthfeel with beautiful dense fruit flavors and a touch of oak that linger on the finish. It can be cellared for 7 to 10 more years and will develop roundness and complexity. This is a Chardonnay that cannot be missed; serve it chilled with lighter poultry and seafood dishes - especially Lobster.

The 2002 is potent and balanced, and can be kept for 5 to 7 years in a nice cellar. Ideal as an aperitif or with cold cuts, salads, white fish, or poultry. Great!

Domaine des Malandes top wine. A magnificent, lightly-oaked Grand Cru Chablis from the best vintage of the last decade. Can age for 10 years or more. Vaudésir, one of the seven Grand Crus, produces wines that can age a decade or more. This is the only wine from Domaine des Malandes that spends any time in oak and it is used judiciously - 50% new oak barrels used for ageing. Made from 30 year old vines that are known for their acidity and richness and get pruned twice each year! The yields are low: averaging only 43 ha/hl over the past ten vintages. This magnificent Chardonnay is golden in color, with an read more...
