Domaine des Huards Cheverny 2012

External Review:

Michel Gendrier converted his winery to biodynamic in order to return to the traditions of his grandfather. His reds see passage in older oak, and his whites all under go lees stirring, both of which result in fuller, more complex wines than what is often found in Cheverny. “Le Pressoir” is a rare red from the region; 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Gamay, it is immediately accessible, with juicy black cherry fruit and earthy undertones.

The 2005 Cheverny displays appellation-typical caraway, lime and sea breeze in the nose, a polished and subtly waxy (Gendrier-typical) palate, and finishes with low-toned nuttiness, toasted caraway and faintly bitter herbs, all in matrix of satisfyingly juicy fresh lime. Some of the texture and weight here is presumably due to the wine’s (appellation requisite minimum of) 15% Chardonnay.
