Domaine des Hauts de Sanziers Saumur 2009

External Review by Premier Wine & Spirits:

Nicely rounded in feel, with tasty fig, quince and persimmon notes backed by a long, green tea-filled finish. Solid, underlying acidity lets it all hang nicely together. Drink now through 2011.

A yummy Loire white from Robert Kacher, one of our favorite French wine importers. Made from 100% Chenin Blanc, it has the quality and complexity of a high-end Vouvray, but with a Saumur price tag! Lush peach, canned pear and red apple notes are backed by bracing minerality and fresh acidity. It drinks especially well with savory Indian or Mexican food, as well as pasta with cheesy sauces or fruit and veggie trays.

A luxurious nose of tropical fruit and caramel balances tantalizing mineral notes and a snappy vein of citrus-infused acidity on the palate of this Chenin Blanc-based white. A surprisingly ageworthy example from a lesser-known Loire appellation.

100% Chenin Blanc from the village of Saumur in France's Loire Valley, this off-dry 2008 expels creamy aromas of banana, fresh peach and cantaloupe, with subtle, tart flavors of mellow grapefruit rind, apple and Bartlett pear. The finish is smooth and endearing, with remarkable balance and length. A quintessential reminder of the Loire's potential for outstanding Chenin Blanc, recommended for those ready to experience something beyond Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and other common varietals. Highly recommended.

The tank-rendered white 2008 Saumur displays a deep gold color, intensity of aroma, and phenolic grip that point to the two full days of pre-fermentative skin contact administered to the grapes. Pineapple, white peach, lemon, and mandarin are joined by black and red berry suggestions that put me in mind of a Nahe Riesling, although there is no mistaking the combination of sheer palate density with bright acidity on display here with any grape other than Chenin Blanc. Smoky, chalky, peach fuzz, peach pit, and citrus zest accents add to the impressively pungent, genuinely gripping finish. This uncompromisingly, blazingly intense exemplar of a huge, generally mediocre appellation is among the growing evidence that white wines of Saumur are in fact capable of distinction. This should be worth following for at least 18-24 months, and perhaps will acquire some refinement and textural polish although many tasters might not think that desirable!
