Domaine des Hauts Chassis Crozes-Hermitage les Galets Crozes-Hermitage 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

From the superlative 2007 vintage, a superb new Crozes Hermitage! Located onthe Hauts Chassis lieu-dit, just to to the north of the village of La Roche deGlun, are to be found some of the best Syrah vines in the appellation. This topcuvée is afforded extra barrique ageing ( 10 months in total) andrewards the drinker with a depth and concentration of fruit seldom encounteredin a Crozes........more often associated with an Hermitage in pointof fact! (Simon Field MW, BBR Buyer)

The Syrah grape is the main ingredient for this Crozes-Hermitage (literally andldquo;beside Hermitageandrdquo;) winner. Standing in the shadow of a more celebrated region andmdash; home to heavyweights Jaboulet, Chapotier, Chapelle, et al. andmdash; has not intimidated this relatively new estate. The notes of black cherry, smoke and the nicely rounded tannins make it a tasty introduction to the region, and a staple for everyoneandrsquo;s home cellar.

From Frank Faugier, a grape grower who founded his own winery in 2003, this is bright, spicy, floral syrah. It lasts with a slightly bitter herbal note that some tasters found more compelling than others; think of it as herbes de Provence rather than tea, and it fits right in with the warm, sunny feel of the fruit.

Juicy and forward, with tasty raspberry, briar and sweet spice notes that gain depth and grip on the dark fruit- and iron-filled finish. Drink now through 2009.

This is really fresh, with very silky-textured blackberry and fig fruit liberally laced with iron, sanguine and black tea notes. The long, tangy finish brings you back for more. Drink now through 2013.

2007 was a spectacular vintage for the Rhandocirc;ne Valley, and this Crozes-Hermitage is no exception. This medium bodied Syrah exhibits cascading aromas of white peaches and white pepper which, in turn, give way to floral undertones of lavender, lilac and acacia. You will find the mouthfeel to be quite pleasant as the andldquo;Les Galetsandrdquo; possesses both medium acidity and medium alcohol. The palate lends generous flavors of ripe cranberry and black tea with hints of iron. Overall, this wine is outstanding, well balanced and a tremendous value. Pairs exceptionally with roast duck and other game/fowl dishes.

This is understated aromatically, but shows terrific intensity from a huge core of blackberry and fig confiture surrounded by tar, cocoa, graphite and mineral notes. The finish is long and rich. Drink now through 2017.
