Domaine des Forges Chaume Premier Cru des Coteaux du Layon 2002

Member Review by duncan 906:

I bought this bottle of wine from the website www.bidforwine.co.uk/auctions/show/31850 for twelve pounds. The Chaume AOC was created in 1950 for sweet botrytised white wines made of 100% chenin blanc, from the area around the village of that name about 12 miles south of Angers on the north bank of the River Layon,a tributary of the Loire. From 2002 the wines were given the designation '1er cru des Coteaux du Layon 'although there has been some opposition to this from wine producers in neighbouring districts leading to it being twice revoked and re-instated.Domaine des Forges is owned by Claude and Stephane Branchereau, fourth generation winemakers.who also make wines under other Loire AOCs.This wine is made from vines over 30 years old and spends time in oak barrels.I drank my bottle with a plate of bread and cheese and enjoyed it very much.It is of couse very sweet like honey or syrup and there is a lot of apricot, pineapple and vanilla fruit there with a hint of citrus.I would say this is a superb wine and equal to many more expensive Sauternes.
