Domaine de Triennes Red Blend Vin de Pays du Var St Auguste 2004

Winemaker's Notes:

Muscular and brawny with currents of fig cake and black licorice, this spicy, grippy Provencal red demands red meat and severely outperforms its price. Decant before drinking!

Triennes's flagship red wine is a blend of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvigon and Merlot. A dark, dense wine with purple hues, it shows spicy aromas combined with ripe fresh fruit. The palate is rich and full of life with plenty of structure. This is a wine that needs some air to truly open up and show its best.

Dark ruby in the glass, with hints of blackberry and cedar on the nose. On the palate, the well-crafted pedigree of this red blend (Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Merlot) emerges. The full body provides a chewy mouthful of fruit and fine but firm tannin. There is a warmth to the black fruits, broad and rich, yet it maintains freshness on the palate. Would outmatch most California Cabs at twice the price. A great everyday wine suitable for connoisseurs.

The owners of famed Burgundy producers Domaine de la Romanee-Conti and Domaine Dujac wanted to show the world that they could make great wines in the obscure appellation of Vin de Pays du Var, located in Provence. This wine proves their collaboration was indeed successful. At first pour, warm aromas of crushed black raspberries fill the glass. This blend of Syrah and Cabernet (and in some vintages Merlot) sports a sleek and velvety mouthfeel with loads of blackberry and cassis fruit, and finishes appropriately dry with touches of spice, lavender, and stone. A great match with leg of lamb, flat-iron steaks, or a helping of poutine (fresh cut fries with cheese curds and brown gravy) during the big game.

Comes from limestone based soil. Aged in old oak barrels. Dark berries, black currants and briar on the palate with minerals, from the limestone based soils, on the finish. A red blend of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from the south of France.
