Domaine de Terres Dorees Jean-Paul Brun Morgon 2016

Winemaker's Notes:

"Jean-Paul Brun has made an absolutely beautiful and very transparent Morgon in the 2016 vintage. The nose jumps from the glass in a vibrant blend of cherries, sweet cranberries, fresh thyme, lovely granitic minerality, vinesmoke and incipient notes of gamebird. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, tangy and very long, with excellent focus and grip, moderate, ripe tannins and lovely balance on the very long, nascently complex finish. This is approachable out of the blocks, but this is a proper Morgon and is really built for some cellaring, so I would try to keep my hands off of it for the next five years and really let it start to build layers of complexity and open up a bit more on the palate. It will be very long-lived and probably superior to the 2015 over the long haul." - John Gilman, A View from the Cellar *(93+ Points)*

Very precise and intense on the nose, fabulous blackberry fruit on the nose, crisp and fresh, tightens up quickly, rich an relaxed on the palate, nice tension, fabulous depth to the fruit here, lacks some transparency but makes up for it with the freshness and purity of the fruit, the finish is quite masculine, super-ripe tannins great purple fruit, almost strawberry fruit(jam), with a nice floral finale note 91pts

Very unexpected. Delicious! Very light color, almost Pinot like. On the nose it is not very usual Beaujolais with candy aromas, there is more of raspberry, roses, violets. On the palate this wine is very young, it can age for a long time. Lean, fruity, very complex palate. Finishes with spice and cherries aromas. Very good cru Beaujolais!

The 2012 Morgon Les Terres Dorees has a crisp green bell pepper bouquet that you might mistake as a fine Chinon. The palate is well-balanced and refined, quite tannic for a Morgon but adorned with a crisp and masculine, foursquare finish the leaves the mouth fresh and reinvigorated. Delicious and classy. Drink 2014–2025+.

Deep ruby. Musky, spice-tinged raspberry and cherry aromas are complemented by smoky minerals and peppery spices. Perfumed and focused on the palate, offering juicy red and dark berry flavors and a hint of spicecake. The mineral quality repeats emphatically on the long, sappy finish, which is nicely framed by smooth tannins.

Like Brun’s other crus only three weeks in bottle when I tasted it, his 2010 Cote de Brouilly — around a third of which did time in his sole foudre and in older barriques — led with a provocatively pungent nose of smoky black tea, horseradish, quarry dust, and just-ripe blueberry and red raspberry. Bright and invigorating, it gushes with tart-edged fruit while delivering more than enough complexity to elicit head-scratching between sips. Sustained and saliva-inducing in its finishing flavors, it should remain a delight for at least the next several years. Brun seeks to assure me that a richer dimension will emerge once this has had a bit more time to rest post-bottling.

Bright ruby-red. Pungent red fruits and potpourri on the highly perfumed nose. Lithe and precise on the palate, offering pure strawberry and raspberry flavors complicated by notes of white pepper and candied violet. Closes with impressive energy, length and lingering florality.
