Domaine de Mourchon Côtes du Rhône Villages Séguret Rosé Loubié 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

his wine has an intense deep purple colour with a nose suggesting spices, liquorice, cooked red fruits. The palate is concentrated, complex and rich with elegant fruit intensity, some spice and harmonious tannins and finishes with an extremely good length.

Set between the picturesque village of Séguret and Mont Ventoux, Domaine de Mourchon was established by the McKinlay family in 1998 with the purchase of 17 hectares of mature vines. Constructed to the highest modern standards, the new winery was completed in 2000. Our TERRACED HILLSIDE VINEYARD, at an average altitude of 350m, is predominately clay and grey limestone which, combined with its microclimate, gives this location a terroir of unique quality. Careful husbandry using natural and organic techniques - ‘culture raisonée’ as it is known in France - in conjunction with combined traditional and advanced methods of vinification, results in a well structured wine with pronounced fruit aromas and strong colours. The winery is on top of a hill in the village of Provencal Seguret, located in southern Cotes du Rhone. It’s a fairly new winery, founded in 1998 with existing vineyards. They make three lines of wine, and the “Grand Reserve” is a blend of Grenache and Syrah from old vines. Here is what you can expect from Domaine de Mourchon 2006 “Grande Reserve” Cotes du Rhone Villages. Look: The rich purple of an advent candle burning for Christmas. Smell: The makings a fine fruit cake with nutmeg, toasty cinnamon, fennel, raspberries and plums simmering on the stove. Taste: This wine is a holiday feast of jammy black cherries, currant, white pepper and carpaccio. Its medium body moves from fruit to earth before a mid-length finish of smooth tannins. Opaque ruby to rim. This displays a lovely medley of aromatics-black cherry, fig, molasses, coffee, anise and pepper... and it continues to improve with air. Earth driven and savory on the palate, though nicely offset by ripe dark fruit, this medium-... John Perry. The 2006 Grande Reserve tastes more like a great Chateauneuf du Pape than a Cotes du Rhone-Villages Seguret. There is plenty of tannin, earth, garrigue, spice box, and pepper characteristics as well as oodles of black cherry and black currant fruit. ... Robert Parker's Wine Advocate.
