The wine reveals a dark ruby/purple color, and a huge nose of jammy, sweet black fruits and herbs. In the mouth, the sweetness, glycerin, high alcohol, and gorgeous extract levels make for a sumptuous drinking experience. The tannins are silky and the finish is formidable. It should evolve gracefully for 10ndash;15 years.
2005 was a fabulous year for Marcoux, and the 2005 Chateaneuf du Pape (80% Grenache and 20% Syrah and Cinsault) boasts a dark plum/purple color along with beautiful bouquet filled with scents of flowers, truffles, roasted meats, blueberries, black raspberries, and licorice. This opulent, intense wine possesses heady alcohol as well as a sweet, soft, full-bodied, moderately tannic finish. This beauty is one of the finest traditional cuvees made over the last decade. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2020+. This brilliant estate in the northern sector of Chateauneuf du Pape is admirably run by Sophie and Catherine Armenier.
The wine is aged in a combination of small barriques, larger demi-muids, and steel tanks. The 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape tips the scales at 15.5ndash;16% alcohol, and was harvested between August 28 and September 15. A blend of 80% Grenache and the balance mostly Syrah with a tiny dollop of Cinsault and Mourvedre, there are 20,000 bottles of the 2003, which was cropped at a meager 20 hectoliters per hectare. Its deep ruby/plum color is followed by an expressive, sweet nose of raspberries, cherries, licorice, and flowers (violets or acacias?) Which jumps from the glass of this full-bodied, superbly-textured, pure 2003. The high level of glycerin as well as sweet tannin in the finish give it a certain accessibility, but my instincts suggest it will be even better with 2ndash;3 years of bottle age. Anticipated maturity: 2007ndash;2017.
Although Chateauneuf du Pape gets all of the attention in the Southern Rhone valley, in neighboring Lirac many hidden gems can be found. This wonderful 2003 is the first vintage for Domaine de Marcoux in Lirac and includes all of the five major red varietals grown in the area; Grenache, Cinsault, Mourvedre, Carignan, and Syrah. And because the grapes in Lirac are grown in rocky soil similar to those in Chateauneuf du Pape the wines tend to share a certain ldquo;mineralityrdquo; in their fine, ripe tannins and shared flavor characteristics of kirsch, blackberry, and earthy, meaty notes.
2005 - Domaine de Marcoux Chateauneuf-du-Pape - France - Region: Rh
The blend of the 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape is 80% Grenache and the rest Syrah and Cinsault. Aged primarily in tank and foudres, with a very small percentage in barrel (the Syrah), this wine has a dense ruby/purple color and a beautiful nose of acacia flowers intermixed with road tar, blueberry, black raspberry, and licorice. The wine is smoothly textured, expressively aromatic, and more elegant and not as powerful as other vintages despite the relatively lofty alcohols that this vintage achieved. This wine should be delicious young and drink well for 12 or more years.
Medium red color. Intensely perfumed nose offers potent aromas of minerally red berries, plum, kirsch and flowers; this could pass for a ripe-year Burgundy. Then silky, suave and fine in the mouth, with pure red berry and cherry flavors accented by subtle garrigue and a hint of candied licorice. Finishes with lush, sweet tannins and lovely persistence.
