Domaine de Marcoux Chateauneuf du Pape 2015

Winemaker's Notes:

92-94 points Josh Raynolds (Vinous): (fermented in concrete vats and aged in a combination of concrete tanks and wood casks) Ruby-red. Energetic, mineral-accented aromas of ripe red and dark berries, complicated by suggestions of incense and pungent flowers. Broad and fleshy on entry, then more taut in the midpalate, offering pliant black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors and a suggestion of five-spice powder. Finishes very long and sweet, featuring slow-building tannins, a touch of smokiness and repeating red fruit character. This wine is shaping up to be an outstanding basic Châteauneuf. (Mar 2017)

Certainly up there with, and possibly eclipsing the '09, the 2010 Domaine de Marcoux Châteauneuf-du-Pape, tasted from multiple lots, should be a fuller, richer version of the '09 with more dark fruits, garrigue, and floral characteristics, full body,... Opaque ruby. Sexy red berry liqueur, incense and Asian spice aromas are complicated by a smoky nuance and a hint of zesty minerality. Shows very good intensity on the palate, which displays sweet raspberry and cherry flavors that take on weight and spiciness with air. Silky and precise, with outstanding finishing clarity and length.

The 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape was fashioned from yields of 12 hectoliters per hectare and is a blend of 74% Grenache, 14% Mourvedre, 9% Syrah and 3% Cinsault aged primarily in cement tanks with one-third spending time in truncated wood foudres. It exhibits a deep ruby/purple color, stunning concentration and lots of raspberry, cassis, blueberry and acacia flower notes. With plenty of glycerin, sweet tannin, a long, heady finish and 15%+ alcohol, it should evolve effortlessly for 15 or more years.

The 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape (74% Grenache, 14% Mourvedre, 9% Syrah and 3% Cinsault aged two-thirds in cement tanks and one-third in wood foudres) has a dense ruby/purple color, a sweet nose of floral-infused blueberry liqueur, a striking minerality,... Bright purple. High-pitched aromas of black raspberry, candied flowers and spicecake, with a mineral overtone. Juicy, focused and pure, offering tangy red and dark berry flavors that turn spicier with air. Finishes with impressive energy and cut, leaving floral and spice notes behind.
