Jean-Pierre de Smet and his cellar master Olivier Leriche both told me that the crop in 2002 was exceptionally clean and very ripe, in fact so ripe that they expressed moderate concern that the wines were permanently marked by the ripeness. And in contrast to the experience of many domaines in this vintage, they said that the malos were extremely fast and were finished by December. M. de Smet noted that yields were quite low, coming in between 32 and 33 hl/ha and the ripeness precluded any chaptalization.
